84 Ford ranger Dizzy clamp bolt

I'm having a real hard time getting to the clamp bolt on the distributer to set the timing on a V6 the dizzy is in the back and blocks the bolt. Is there a trick or special tool?
 
You might try a distributor tool. They are designed at angles to get to those bolts. Some are manufacture specific, I found one that is adaptable. AutoZone or KD tools is good sources, maybe not AutoZone as most cars do not have dizzys anymore. I believe Ford is 1/2" and a double angle tool. JC Whitney might still have them too!
 
You have my sympathy. I've had an 84 Ranger V6 since new. I made a wrench that is shaped something like the one shown here:

It will be metric. Additionally, if the bolt has not been changed, it will have either a 6 point scalloped star head pattern OR a 6 point internal star pattern with a "tamper proof" post in the center. For the first type, Ford had a #T82L-12270-A wrench. For the second type, you can break out the center post & use an internal spline wrench. Either type will need appropriate offsets. Maybe you can borrow one from a local mechanic friend?

I hope you are lucky & someone has already changed to a standard hex metric.

How big a security bit would you need? Harbor Freight has a kit for those type of fasteners. My ’99 Ranger doesn’t seem to have a timing adjustment, short of a new chip.

I haven't touched it for literally 20 years. Gave the tool to someone else.

I do remember that mine was the external star bolt head, not the pin in the center pain in the tail. I was able to bend a six point box end into shape, a little fitting for the star, weld on a bent extension, & get it to work.

I found that the timing control & knock sensor were & still are working well & keep the timing right on the edge of pinging under all conditions. If I lug it, there are a couple of pings until the timing adjusts. Haven't touched the distributor since.

This Euro V6 is the toughest, most trouble free vehicle I've ever owned. I think it started life as a 60 degree V4 pump motor with internal balancer, added two cylinders, & removed the internal balancer. Still on the second set of plugs at 120,000 miles. The same truck that still has it's original brake fluid, BTW.

Local parts store should carry a "distributor wrench"
I got one that is double ended and comes apart in the center with a 3/8 square drive the fits nicely in a ratchet if needed. I believe it cost around $10. And I find the odd use for it on other applications here and there.
 
On my truck, the bolt head is "external Torx". Do you know of an external Torx, metric, distributor wrench. At the time, Ford had a special tool which I didn't want to bother with.

Eric hasn't said which he has, but the early 84 V6 engines also came with an internal Torx, with security pin, metric bolt. Even harder to fit while going around the obstacles.

My tool is 12pt. That is essentially "external torx" Unless I'm mistaken (which has been known to happen)
