'71-72' Steering lock assembly in a '74?

I've discovered that my steering lock assembly is worn out, at least the shaft that connects to the ignition switch is.

a '74 steering lock assembly is $150 +, but the '71-'72 steering lock assembly is about $60.

At least a couple of sources for these imply that a '71-'72 assembly would fit a '74 and that the main difference is that the harness for the ignition switch connects using bullet connectors in the earlier version vs a plug in the later one.

would the earlier lock accept the newer ignition switch? and will the whole assembly fit the steering column?

I think the main problem you may have is that the '74 is a 6-wire switch, and the earlier one is a 5-wire. Your seat-belt warning won't be operational - maybe not a problem for you.

Hi Rick.

I've got a new ignition switch and harness. As long as that will fit into the steering lock assembly, I shouldn't have to worry about the wiring ( I hope).

Thanks for the reply.
