I'd think about getting a new driveshaft when you get around to it. That collar deal is a bit on the iffy side, if it gives (mine did) you can have a huge wreck.
I think Herman rec getting a solid shaft actually.

I have the seal ordered from NAPA... it will be here on Monday. As far as the shaft goes, it would be nice to have a one piece drive shaft and that will be on my list to do when finances allow. I did start the engine the other day and it shifted through all the gears nice and smooth. I'm getting closer.

I'm still running the original drive shaft with the locking collar, but it's only been for a couple of thousand miles. I've had the car past 85mph, and it has felt good. I think a lot has to do with how good the fit is with the splined shaft. Time will tell.

And something I just thought of. What if I just welded my shaft together in it's current position. How would that differ from having a new, one piece shaft made up??

If the poor thing was neglected (i.e. not greased on a schedule) they can get REALLY sloppy. But it sounds like yours is fine. At 70+MPH you'd know right away if t'wern't.

IMO, welding yours would be "iffy" in that the center (rotating mass stuff) may not be "held" correctly. Better to either run with what ya got or replace it entirely. If it were me, I'd stick with the splined one just for the sake of some "slop tolerance" for power-on/power off compliance.

That's what I had done. Welded and balanced by a local shop. I think about $50. Worked great.
