5-speed up-date....

My 5-speed conversion ran into the brick wall last week :wall:
The PO had removed the mounting bracket for the rear transmission mount. One of our own came to my rescue.... <span style="text-decoration: underline">THANK YOU Poolboy!!</span>
The new bracket arrived yesterday. It got de-greased, bead blasted and now has a fresh coat of POR15.
Here is where I am in the process.....

Thanks sail.... just reading the word "crunch" brings shivers to me! Hopefully another couple of days to get things back in order and give it a go. Next comes the diff... it leaks more than I do :laugh:

Looks good. When I did mine, I put a couple of 2x6 pieces across the gearbox tunnel opening on top of the floor and placed a jack underneath. I wiggled the box in place over the jack and slipped the wood pieces out. Easier said than done with 90lbs of gearbox.

Right you are Peter. It was a bit of a chore getting it in. I did have a floor jack under the transmission and a bottle jack under the engine. Finding the "sweet spot" was still not easy. Will report back after I drive it.

This HVDA conversion is something I'm considering for TS24528. How difficult was it finding a Celica/Supra W58 gearbox in good shape and what is a reasonable price one can expect to pay?

Bob- They are getting more difficult to find. I made many calls and even drove to two or three places before I found the one that I bought.
BEFORE you buy anything, check the HVDA website for some instructions on how to "check for wear". Since Toyota produced the same trans. with different gear ratios, you will also want to check that out. TALK to HERMAN at HVDA before you go looking; he will be able to give you some good advice on what to look for.
As for me, I paid around $200 for mine plus another $30 for the speedo gear from Toyota.

I bought mine off ebay, from a wrecking yard in Corvallis, Or.
I paid $229, free shipping. It came on a pallet, 7 to 10 days later.
It works great, downshifts beautifully, quiet as can be.

I also got mine about a year and a half ago from e-bay. $150 + $50 shipping...It checked out fine according to Herman's check list. I put it in without tearing into it, just replacing front and rear seals. Works great. It's a nice box. A few guys in our Triumph club have installed them. They all brought them to a local tranny shop to get checked out, and none of them needed any work other then the seals. I guess I'm just a gambling man. :laugh:

OK, so my new tranny is in. Today I filled it up with fluid and there seems to be a slight drip from the rear seal. Yes, I did install new ones.
Now what? In order to put another new seal in, I have to remove he slip flange at the back of the tranny. In order to do that, I have to remove the drive shaft.... which means I have to drop the diff.
I'm not happy now... any suggestions?

When I did mine I found one on eBay from an '83 Celica for $65 plus $60 shipping. At that price it was worth the risk and 2 years later it's still running great.

While Herman is very specific about which W58 tranny to get, one of the 6-Pack guys found a bunch more that will work but they require buying about $130 in parts from Toyota to replace the shifter housing. It's pretty simple to do and it does open up the tranny options to any W58 up to through the '92 Supra.

The ups and downs these cars "provide"is something else.
Maybe the seal will swell after it's been in contact with the oil for a while or just wishfull thinking. About the oil, what's in there and how much ?

Maybe you don't have to remove the drive shaft. I'm assuming that you <span style="font-weight: bold">haven't</span> retained the original drive shaft with the slip joint and had one made up. After you unbolt the flange, unbolt the tranny mount and see if you can jack up the tranny enough to allow Hermans slip flange to be pulled out. If you still can't get it out, perhaps, while the tranny's jacked up, you can push it one way while pushing the shaft the other so flange clears. If you are using the original drive shaft with the locking collar, just jacking up the tranny and unlocking the collar and pushing the drive shaft flange back should be enough.

And besides, why would you have to drop the diff?? Doesn't the drive shaft come out when you unbolt the two flanges??

And make sure that the seal that you installed is correct. I bought mine at a FLAPS and the front one was incorrect, and had to go back to get the right one. Maybe that's what happened with your rear seal.

Regarding the oil, I used 3 quarts of Redline MT90. I'm somewhat concerned since even after adding 3 quarts, nothing came out of the overflow plug next to the reverse switch.

OK, now to answer the other questions...
Yes, I did retain the original drive shaft. Collapseing the drive shaft still will not give me the room to remove the flange. Now, your suggestion of jacking up the transmission and gaining the needed room is a good thought.
I did want to start it this afternoon to see how it shifts while it's up on the stands, but alas I did not attempt it until I resolve the transmission fluid level, and the rear seal issue.

You are just about right... Unbolting the two flanges at the rear of the transmission and collapseing the drive shaft just about gives you the room you need to get the transmission flange out. I did get it out, and am now waiting for another seal which should be here on Monday.

I'd think about getting a new driveshaft when you get around to it. That collar deal is a bit on the iffy side, if it gives (mine did) you can have a huge wreck.
I think Herman rec getting a solid shaft actually.
