That's a good question, I would like to know the answer to that myself.

Just let me know when y'all are read to open Moss' southern warehouse.

...although I could use a 680-250... :jester:

Running a 1:1 4th at 3000 RPM and a 3.55 gear ratio should put you right at 60 MPH. At 3500 it would be at 71 MPH.

Wow - that's going to be a real game changer.
Running your standard 4 speed transmission what kind of rpm would you see at 60mph? Around 3K? A little more maybe 3.3K?
That would be ultra cool. :driving:

Wow - no need for a 5 speed swap then.

My experience has been that 1st gear has more than enough grunt if things are sorted at all. A difference of 15% shouldn't hurt much down there. However up in 4th it would be like having overdrive!

Can these be fitted to all Spridget pumpkins? No real reason to change the 3.7 as that's so close already, but I have a couple 4.2 diffs that would be happier as a 3.55 for sure!

Shawn, out of recognition for this research and hard work, can I suggest you double what he got last time?

Hey, whatcha should look into is the BMW 5 speed swap the guys in Germany are doing. It's the ZF trans w/ removalble bell housing. 81-83 318 IIRC. That's the only thing that'll be half way findable ( is that a word?) on this side of the pond.

Can my Midget afford parts that came out of a BMW?

Good question Shawn,
It's a supply and demand thing.
Luckily the supply of wrecked BMW's and those upgrading to newer is large. The demand isn't huge yet especially since Spridget owners haven't perfected the swap yet.

I've seen good BMW transmissions out there for what you might expect to pay for a Datsun 5 speed or less.

Keep us posted. I was just about to start a post for all of us to find you one. They do come up, mostly in the northwest. If your buddy can't come through, I'm sure we'll be able to find you one sooner or later.

We look out for each other 'round these here parts. (no pun inteneded)

I agree, $800 is too much. Then again, I once sold some NOS Datsun Z door panels for $3K and thought that was too much too.

PM Billm, IIRC, he just got an "extra" 5 speed.

LOL...my Sprite with a sc/cr box and warmed motor with
lightened components wouldn't make it up my driveway without smoking the clutch with a 3.5. Then there is the loss of acceleration. I couldn't live with a 3.7.
You guys are lucky to be able to run that rear gear.
How does the 1st gear ratio of a stock ribcase compare to a Datsun?

Datsun 1st and 2nd is lower than the standard ribcase.

Third is about the same and 4th is 1:1 in both boxes (as you'd expect)

Thanks. I know Kim's car runs REALLY well with this setup.
Makes a nice blend with "supercruise" available in 5th.

I don't have any more good 5-speeds, 3 that are not usable as is but no good ones.
If someone wants one that NEEDS a rebuild for $300 each I have 3 of them.

Perhaps the lightened componants and warming were part of the "problem". Hotter cam means less low end torque. Less reciprocating mass weight requires more torque from the motor to pull off.

Sounds like you had to spin it up to equal the misssing inertia and torque present before.

That's just a WAG though.

So we finally got our cost on the item and they are pricey. We are listing for $599.95. We have ordered 3 and it will be a "few weeks" before they arrive.

We are starting our Buy More, Save More sale on Feb. 20 so they would qualify for a 12% discount right off the bat.

They are under #15, part number 265-265, here https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29295

How about those thrust washers? Kinda would be nice to have those when ordering the gear set. Are you aware of another source for those?
