MGB 1979 Timing problems after removing distributor - Help Please!

Well, that plan didn't work out so I reverted back to the original firing order prior to making the change. I reset the first cylinder to top dead center and tried it again. It fired, sputtered but wouldn't run to speed. So, advanced the distributor a little clockwise and it didn't get any better. So I went back to the prior sputter position and it sputtered again. I then went counter clockwise and tried starting but was low cranking due to battery drain. I stopped so that it could recharge via my trickle charger that I keep onboard. I will try again tomorrow as we may be on to something with sputter and firing. Some good news is better than none at all. I did notice when I pulled the distributor that the grommet on the top was pinched and so was the distributor ground wire. I removed the grommet and the wire didn't show any signs of a break in the jacket but that could be because it has a silicone jacket. I wonder if the wire inside got damaged? your thoughts?

Might have to back distributor some more and move wires. Ohm meter can check wire or make a test wire to replace it. Getting more sputter, good! Getting close.

Larry,

I found the problem. The Petronix Ignitor Mag Sleeve doesn't fit the Lucas 45DE distributor correctly. The Mag Sleeve doesn't lock in free spins on the shaft. I'm talking with they're tech support but they are really slow ........... was told they've never had this problem before. ?????

Some of them are not the brightest bulbs. Take a picture and send it to them.

I have a related problem with a friends 79 MGB. His 45 distributor kept frying Pertronixs so we bought the flamethrower distributor and put that in. Of course it required a timing change, but the weird part is now we get pinging from the engine on accelleration. So the advance curve is going to far or fast. I have adjusted the timing to try to correct this but no luck with large 6 degree changes. So, has anyone taken one of these apart and see how the vacuum advance works?

Larry, Finally got the goods to make it run. Works a lot better when the dam tangs on the mag sleeve go all the way down in the distributor. Never the less, thank you for your diligence in helping me solve the matter. One thing for sure. I know a lot more about my distributor than i did when I began this quest! thanks again ....... Bill

Glad I could be of some help. Enjoy your drive!

Glad it worked out! and, a good reminder for me at least that 1) 99% of the time the problem is with the last thing I worked on or replaced and not the 50 other possible things it could be and 2) Don't assume that because it is new that it works.

Cheers! :cheers::driving:
