You might want to ditch the "hooked and taped together" black leads and buy yourself a single ground cable that you attach to a nut and bolt securely attached to the body...but yes, get yourself a single battery. Either buy a plain old cheapo group 26 battery or do as I did and buy a Westco AGM battery which should last a good bit longer if you don't abuse it.
 
68 and newer MGB's are negative ground! I go with one 12 volt battery and always put a battery kill switch on the ground side. Our local Advance auto sells a plastic unit with a red removable key for under $10. I mount it behind the passenger seat thru the rear bulkhead. If(when) you have a electrical issue you can kill all power without removing the battery cover.Once smoke starts leaking out there is very little time before major damage is done to a harness. I am not the kind that likes to drill or cut into a car BUT i think this is a exception to that rule thats a good idea. Bob
 
Thanks for the info. With a red cable already screwed to the frame I expected a positve ground...glad I asked before hooking up!!
 
I'm obviously a real "unmechanic"!! I don't know what this is, don't know what to do with it and can't find it in a manual. HELP...PLEASE?? Thanks.

You are looking at a Carbon canister. If it ain't broke don't fix it. That is part of the pollution system. Also is that black spot on the vertical part of the fender lip a pin hole? There appears to be a vertical line just ahead of it like a patch has been put there. Its common for a northern car to rust in that area. The panels under the fender have a seal there and it holds dirt and moisture. I wash the wheel wells on my cars several times a year to remove the dirt that builds up. Bob
