Post-War Other 1965 Triumph Vitesse Spider Convertible

There is one of these for sale up here in Toronto for $1750.00 cdn. But I can't find a picture of this car anywhere. "Spider" is there such a beast?

Thanks Jeff, but just where in the heck does the Spider part come in? I think of things named "Spider" to be a sportscar.

Paul, I think the "Spider" bit is in the owners mind. If an Alfa or Fiat convertible is a "Spider", then a Triumph must be too?
I've certainly never heard of any Triumph "Spiders". Found some in a Spit once, though. Big black suckers, with orange hourglass markings on them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are also a few pictures of the Vitesse -- and the virtually identical Sports 6 -- at my web site. Should anyone call on this, I'd love to get at least a commission number (VIN) for my Database (link in my .sig file).

And yeah, the "Spider" part is probably what anyone used to Fiats calls a convertible! But to my knowledge, it was only used as a name for a particular TR7 special edition.

Actually, I'd love to; it would go nicely with the over a dozen OTHER Triumph projects I've allowed to follow me home over the years! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But it might just be a good project for someone. Not that you can make money restoring these any better than you can any other British car, but top-flight, show-winning Sports 6s have sold for $15,000-20,000 or more in the last several years!

Actually it is probably a Phaeton which would be a convertible with at least two rows of seats.

"PHAETON - it means opened top car with four seats. French term taken from the Greek "Phaeton" who drove the chariot of his sun-god father, Helios. A small four door open touring car."

most people however do not require 4 doors, and historically this has been used for cars with more than 4 seats such as the big convertible Dusenbergs which clearly were NOT sports cars.
Incidently Jeep called the original CJs a "2-door Phaeton"

If I'm not mistaken, "spyder" means convertable in Italian. I think I read that somewhere. Isn't there at least one Italian speaker on the board that can confirm or repute this?

Either spyder or spider are taken to mean any open top car.

In Italy a full open top convertible may be called a cabrio, shortened from the French term cabriolet. While a panel top with some surrounding bodywork is called a Targa. Both would still be called spiders.

The Targa top “Magnum PI” Ferrari is a 308GTS; 3 liter, 8 cylinder, Gran Turismo, Spyder just as the fully open “Ferris Bueller” Ferrari is (a replica of) a 250GT Spyder California.

So that means the TR6 is a "Spider"? Wasn't it a Ghia body design? I could be wrong on that one, so I'm asking, not stating fact.

Karmann, German company, they made the VW 'Karmann Ghia' and they still produce many things for VW/Audi.
