1500 - Electric fan conversion??

I put the CSI's sender in place of the old temperature sender- just below the thermostat. I had to retap the housing to 3/8's 16tpi (I'll double check on that, so don't take that as gospel rite now)- the original threading was close, but no dice.

Note that the sender for the CSI gauge is what tells the gauge to turn the fan on. No fussing with sticking probes in radiators with this thing!

You can use the existing green wire that goes from the sender to the gauge, however mine was looking like it was deteriorating from the heat of the engine, so I ran a new one. I haven't got around to insulating the wire (I'll run it through some braided stuff) yet.
 
Darn. I wish I had seen GMichael's post a few days ago.

Inspired by this thread. I bought myself a birthday present on a whim... you guessed it, an electric fan. I pickied up an Imperial by Hayden pn# 226112 at Advance Auto for $65 and a thermo switch kit (pn# 226206) for $27. It's a 12" fan. The application chart did not reccomend the 10" for primary cooling and being as I live in Texas, I did not want to take chances. I had to cut off a little bit from the fan guard to make it fit. (pictured below) but I used a token saw and it was easy.

It'll be another month or so before I have it on the road. I will report back on whether or not it was a worthwhile investment. But I must say it is very nice being able to get my hands infront of the engine!

I was concerned with a 10 inch fan as that does appear to be rather small. I may end up picking up another fan later to install behind the radiator, if I can find one thin enough- and for under a hundred bucks.
 
I think you will be fine with the 10-inch fan. That is the size of fan they sell with the VB kits. Of course, CFM is more relevant than size. I was unable to find a CFM rating available for the fans at Advance Auto, so I went with the advice of their application chart. But at 1250 CFM, I think you are good to go.
 
I pulled the clutch on my stock pump, then I cut off the shaft where the clutch was. That was stupid, but I could not resist.
 
Yeah. It's a tight fit.

For all the justifications I came up with for this electric fan project (ie. better gas mileage, more power, faste warm up) the real reason I did it was to make room to work on the front of the engine.

I had thought about that too. Wasn't sure how the the pulley was pressed on, so I avoided the idea.
 
So Michael, I bought one of your fans. Still have to decide whether I'm ready to drop that much coin on a gauge to control it, or whether I'll go with the (less dainty) sensor-down-the-tube thingies. Or perhaps a junkyard solution... my old vw has a relay & sensor, there must be a way to Macguyver an auto control.
