1275 with 1098 Transmission

I'm going to be replacing my 1098 engine in my 59
BE with a 1275 engine, using the same ribbed transmission that's in the car.
Came across this online, Bottom line is do I have to make modifications as stated to fit the 1275? Thought it was a straight swap? Just wanted to confirm that he's talking about a smooth-case transmission....thanks.....
-Also can I continue using my single brake/clutch cylinder?

"For more torque and horsepower, the early model engines and gearboxes could be replaced by 1098 or 1275 engines and gearboxes with no other modifications needed. However, if a 1098 or 1275 engine is fitted to a Mk 1 or 2 gearbox, the bell-housing must be ground out to clear the new clutch. Also, the carbon thrust and clutch release fork to suit the engine must be fitted to the bell-housing in order to get a fully operational clutch. As well as this, the 1275 diaphragm clutch must use the 1" bore clutch slave cylinder as fitted to the 1275 engines - for a correctly operating and long-lasting clutch. (The 1275 split master cylinder set-up should also be fitted - or the hydraulic line adaptors used."
 
I'm also in the process of putting a 1275 with rib cased tranny in my BE. I thing the info you have pertains to matching a 1275 to a smooth case. The rear engine plate on the 948 has a lip around it and won't let the bell housing fit flush against the engine without grinding the lip off the rear engine plate. If you had the tranny installed to a 1098 you should be able to match it up to the 1275 with no major problems. As per the slave valve, that's a question I was about to ask on the forum. Look at the link posted on 2/5/07 #248554 by Sarastro It will answer most of your questions.

I ran into that same problem. Bugsy my '68 Sprite came with a 1098 and Smoothcase out of a '66 Spridget. Car also came without any hydraulics, M/C or Slave. I ordered the Dual Master and Rib Case Slave and discovered Bell Housing issues that would not allow the Slave to be bolted in place. The 948 Slave comes in at a 30-40 degree angle so it can clear the bellhousing. Solution, Die Grinder to the rescue. I needed to make about 1/2 Quarter Sized Dimple in the top of the Engine Backplate to get everytrhing to fix and line up properly. Air Compressor and Die Grinder and 1 or 2 Grinding Wheels on the Air Tool solved the problem. Upside down for 30 minutes under car on garage floor in the middle of winter was not pleasant but a little bit of engineering and thought got everything to work and line up.

Now if you've got engine out of car and can get easier access and better leverage this job will progress quickly. There is a lot of metal in that backplate and this should not compromise strength in any way.
 
Oner other thought. Pushrods are different lengths from the smoothcase to the Rib Case. If you are using same MC and Same Slave you may or may nor need to change pushrod lengths. I dug this out of my note:

"Per Frank C. 1275 slave rod is 2-11/16" from the center of the hole to the end.
1275 it should measure 3" from the center of the hole to the end of the pushrod. The 948 and 1098 cars are only 2 1/2" long"

Frank C. would be the definitive source on this one.

Good problem solvings skills on your part. I shouldn't have that problem because I've got a 1098 and a ribbed case tranny.

Just noticed I'm not a FRESHMEN MEMBER anymore...now I'm a member. Does that mean I get to leave work early?

I am still using the original type dual MC and have been for years w/o probs. though I did switch to the one with the larger bore (I am also running disc brakes!).

Jim, if that engine came out of a '66, the tranny sure didn't. Ribcases were installed in all Spridgets beginning in '63. Does the engine number begin with 10CG or 10CC?
If its the latter, it could be out of a '66. 10CG's were in '63's and '64's.

P.O told me it came out of a '66 and had been rebuilt. Not sure if that ever happened or not as engine tag is missing. 1098 runs fairly strong. Smoothcase is a little notchy downshifting into 3rd gear. Bugsy came courtesy of a guy in Cincinnati who had no less than 4 Spridgets in his garage and backyard including a really cherry white '62 with Brooklands Type Windscreen. He came home 5 years ago on a trailer and 6 months of intense Spridget Therapy, after breaking up with my fiancee, and Bugsy was running. 5 years later Bugsy is still in the driveway and my fiancee got back together again. Good newd I've still got Bugsy and still got the fiancee. See Spridget Therapy was good for both of us.

I've got a 1275 and Rib Case in the garage that I picked up a few years ago. Plan is to rebuild the spare 1275 and install the ribcase. Plan, plan, plan. Never the time or if I've got the time not the money. One of these days.

Bugsy is sleeping right now under cover with snow on him. At 2 degrees this AM in Dayton I need to wait a little while before I go out and check the block. I tried to start him 2 weeks ago when temps were up in the sunny upper 30's and not quite enough juice in the battery. I know at 2 degrees there definitely isn't enough juice in there. Come on Spring.
