1275 clutch assembly

After 6 months of taking things apart and rebuilding sub-systems I actually have to start reassembly before winter sets in. I beg everyone's indulgence over the next few weeks... I may be in over my head.

I'm replacing the 948 and smoothcase in my bugeye with a 1275 and ribcase. I'm replacing the slave cylinder, although it looks the same as on my smoothcase. I purchased a 3" pushrod to replace the 2-1/2" that I had.

In taking off the flywheel to replace the ring gear I realized that there is a shim behind the flywheel. With a 3" rod is there a way that I can I know that the throw will be proper? I do not know if any material has been removed from the flywheel.

In a related matter, is there any source of a retaining tab available for the flywheel bolts? As of now I torqued the bolts to 40 ft lbs and used loctite, but not lockwashers. Will that suffice?

I can't find any reference to a torque for the pressure plate bolts. I will just tighten them with lockwashers.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate this site.

You can't, but it doesn't matter, the hydraulics will take up any differences

The lock tab is Moss part # 460-415, but I don't use it, It is so soft ot doesn't really do much in my opinion. I use SAE flat washers and locktite. YMMV

Michael,

The pushrod for a 1275 w/rib case should be , 2 11/16” from hole center to end. I think that extra length will cause you problems.

Did you end up with the seal kit with your engine? That could be the source of your shim. Otherwise, I don't think I've ever seen them shimmed. What is the thickness of the shim?

Gerard-

There is a Moss seal, but the shim seemed thinner then would have been needed to clear the oil pump housing- perhaps 1/16" or 3/32". I can pull the flywheel, check the thickness, and get back to you if it would help. I do not know if the flywheel thickness was reduced in a possible resurfacing. That might explain the shim.

The pushrod is 2 11/16" as you said. It was sold as a 3" rod. Given that it is the proper length, is there still a problem due to the shim? Sorry, I wasn't clear on whether your concern was the shim thickness, or my describing a 3" rod.

Thanks,

Michael

...was concerned about the push rod length, and puzzled by the presence of a shim. The shim wouldn't be there to clear the pump cover, it to make room for the lip seal on the flange. That's why I guessed that you had one installed. Who was your source for the engine? You can message me privately if you prefer.

Gerard-

I checked the Moss site and the shim is a part of the kit- should have checked that sooner.

I guess the question now is does the pushrod have to be shortened by the thickness of the shim. I don't have the directions since the seal came on the engine.

See also my Email.

Michael

no Michael, I wouldn't worry about the push rod length. You'll be fine.
