1100 & 1275 ?'s

My bugeye currently has an 1100. Roughly how much would it cost to get a motor like this rebuilt?

Does anyone sell a running 1275, like a crate motor, so that all i would have to do is drop it in?

Would it be cheaper to buy a junker 1275 and rebuild it than buy a running 1275?

Also is the ribcase transmission mechanical or hydralic? I would like to get away from the current hydralic if i can.

I hope these ?'s make sense. I am going to be sticking with the current 1100 or getting a 1275. So no sr20de or other swap for me, What my dads says goes. He is cool with any swap, even sr20, but he would want the car to be able to be turned back to original if need be. And i think i would do to much surgery to do it, oh well. thanks

Not too much in the way of "crate motors". A 1098 vs 1275?! What? Are you trying to start a Holy War!

Tell us about the money you want to spend and we can tell you how to spend it.

I would try and find a running 1275 and install it. In the long run, that is your least expensive option, and will give you the best results. This was a very common swap "back in the day", and should help, not hurt the car's value. You already have a non-original engine, so what the heck.

Ideally, the owner will let you run a leak down test on it before you commit.

While you're at it, grab the ribcase trans (yep, still has a hydraulic clutch) and the front disc brakes from the donor car also. If you are parting it out, suggest you also keep the steering rack, radiator, and front sway bar (if so equipped).

of course money is an issue. How much do i want to spend, i dont really know. I will save up until i have enough. i would like to go with a 1275. i guess i just need to keep hunting and waiting or searching until 1 becomes available. Does the ribcase have issues like the stock transmission. My dad said the hydralic fluid gets onto the clutch and starts to slip. I dont want that.

My dad has his moments of smartness. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Naa, clutch cyl is out side the transmission. Leak would not get inside. In any case get a good cyl and it will not leak.

The clutch slave cylinder is outside the bellhousing (not concentric) so it is no problem. dickc has a 1275 for sale, but I do not know how expensive it would be to ship it. The ribcase is the stock transmission for most spridgets. It has a non-syncr first gear, but other than that they are pretty rugged units.

as I've offered before, I will in the near future have a 1275 for sale, less than 50000 miles, and with the exception of the exhaust portion from the manifold to the pipe is about all you will need new, besides hose, belts, and any other degrade able stuff, other than that it did run the last time I drove it, so there would be no reason for me to think that it wouldn't take much to get it going. of course it is an LBC so it could be a ticking time bomb. even though when I did drive it it had a nasty backfiring problem the engine did pull pretty strong, I had no idea until about 6 months after I bought it how little hp it had, it sure felt like a lot more. basically I'm getting rid of 99% of the mechanicals, to start new, so my loss will be your gain. I know you are all the way in PA, but if you are interested we can figure something out. check the classifieds in the future, as things come off, I will post there, then craigs list, then possibly ebay.

I have a couple of rebuildable 1275s I would like off my garage floor.
$100 each, 3 or $250.
2 turn over, one is dissassembled minus pistons and rods.

so that would be $100 for a 1275 that turns over, but still needs some work. i will talk with my pops and see what he says. I dont know how quickly we want to start on the engine part. NJ is a heck of a lot closer than LBC.

Went through the same dilema last year. Simply put -- cost more to rebuilt my existing 1098 vs. buying a 1275 and having it rebuilt. A friend & I took out and put in. A pro (former MG mechanic from Columbus, OH) rebuilt it & tranny for me. Cost ~ $2500 including tranny / modestly built up 1275 (he provided) and differential / clutch / etc ...

Car runs wonderful. Email me if you want his contact info. My email is: gzeck@email.com

The 1275s I have may be fine, I have never started them.
But I would at least do rings, bearings and a new oil pump just for piece of mind.
Yes York is about a 3 hour ride to pick up an engine or 2.
