[h=2]Two Healeys from prestigious Arthur Carter collection set to headline Bonhams end of year auction
[/h]
Bonhams have announced the sale of two significant Austin-Healeys from the esteemed collection of marque connoisseur, Arthur Carter.

The cars in question are an 1953 ex-Donald Healey Austin-Healey 100 Coupe, and ‘SMO 746’*- the ex-Works/John Gott 1959 Austin-Healey 3000 Rally Car.

All three cars will be sold at Bonhams year-end sale on December 6, at New Bond Street, London, among a number of other coveted classics.

The 1953 Austin-Healey 100 Coupe, registered ONX 113, was the much loved everyday car of Austin-Healey founder, Donald Healey, who used it extensively over a 10-year period following its production. Healey used it as a development mule for parts that would form part of the later 100S coupe, with the 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine, gearbox and disc brakes all tested and remained on ONX 113.

The 1959 Works Rally 3000 – ‘SMO 746’ – is the very last of a number of the Works Rally cars from Mr Carter’s collection. SMO 746 was one of three of the first series of 3000 MKI Works Rally cars produced that competed in the 1959 and 1960 International Rally seasons. It was raced by the likes of the Pat Moss (Sir Stirling’s sister), the first ever British Touring Car champion Jack Sears, and the late Erik Carlsson.

‘SMO 746’ and ‘ONX 113’ are the longest standing members of Carter’s collection, however he now feels the time is right for them to find a new home and be cherished by a new generation, ‘I have enjoyed owning these cars for many years and am not using them as much as I would like’, Carter confessed. ‘The time has now come for Bonhams to sell the cars and I am sure the new owners will enjoy them as much as I have.’

Elsewhere in collection and facing sale is a Connaught A-Type Racing Single-Seater, a car which boasts a long standing historic racing career in the hands of Ken Flint, Jack Horton and Dan Margulies in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

All three motor cars will be previewed in the Bonhams marquee at this weekend’s Goodwood Revival, taking place 12 September.

I've always loved the shape of ONX 113. I could never afford what that car is going to sell for but I maybe one day i'll find the enough money somewhere to build myself a replica.

I don't think that they were being offered for sale at Goodwood, just being shown to build interest. The 6th Dec sale is the key event. What a Christmas present that would be !

From the Bonhams write-up :

Healey had asked chief designer, Gerry Coker, to produce two variants of a coupe on the four-cylinder Austin-Healey 100 platform, in order to explore the possibility of producing a coupe for series-production. A red car, 'ONX 113', and a blue car 'OAC 1' were produced. The red car is, by common consent, regarded as the prettier of the two and it was the one that Donald Healey subsequently commandeered for himself. The car was used for continuous development and, when the 100S competition programme came on stream, Donald had the 100S mechanicals, including engine, gearbox and disc brakes, installed. The car effectively became a 100S Coupe, making it totally unique. The blue car still survives and became the test bed in period for the later six-cylinder engine for the subsequent 100/6 model.
To Healey collectors around the world, the 100 Coupe is regarded as perhaps the most important – and arguably most coveted – Healey of all, taking Gerry Coker's original timeless design to an even higher level. Donald's coupe is a truly historic and significant motor car.
