The "Old Sturbridge Village" kitchen garden at mid-summer. Just under one half acre of pre-1900 variety vegetables, (plus indian corn, potatoes, and rye planted farther down the hill).

Lower garden: Jerusalem artichoke, winter squash, watermelon, pole beans, medicinal herbs.

Upper garden: biennial seed bed, cucumbers, summer squash, salad, bush beans, carrot, beet, parsnip, onion.

I've been volunteering there as a farmer/gardener for over ten years. So how's your garden at home?

Really nice garden, but I was hoping to see some Punkins! No Punkins! :eagerness: PJ

Punkins (pumpkins) are winter squash! They're still small, and under the leaves. We've got Boston Marrow, Sugar Pie, Long Pie, Canada Crookneck, and Jonathan. Just wait until October ...

By the way, the traditional "round orange pumpkin" we associate with Halloween, was considered cattle feed back in the day. And most of today's canned pumpkin isn't what you think it is.

This looks exactly like my garden!

Kind of off topic here, is that way lots of American spell it? punkin's

As a Canadian here, I've only ever seen the spelling pumpkin's

Or maybe I'm just strange... :rolleye:

Well, "punkin" is just a way of writing the word like many people pronounce it. You're correct, the "official" word is pumpkin.

Of course, there are some Canadiens who call it "la citrouille".

Didn't mean to start a debate. I copied the name Punkin from the title of the post as a fun thing. Sorry, but I do know the appropriate spelling. :encouragement: PJ

Perhaps some of those from out east, I guess we're too formal in the west...

We have (in no particular order) deer, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks and one %$#@woodchuck that dug two g-normous holes next to my foundation. We can't get rid of him. No exterminator will touch them;it's illegal to transport them away to another location (if you can believe that nonsense) and my BB gun will only **** him off - so - no vegetable garden for us.
