BJ8 Door hinges

I noticed the Drivers side door on my BJ8 seems to have a slight up and down movement when one pushes up or down on the door. Door closes better when lifting up slightly on the door. I was thinking of having the door hinges rebuilt, but do not want to cause any misalignment of the door fit by the rebuilding. The right side door has no play and operates very well. Anyone have this done and are there any suggestions who can do this sort of work? Suggestions appreciated !!

Thanks,
John

Hi
.Sounds like the hinge pin is worn.
Replacing that may correct the error???
Alternatively, you might replace the whole hinge with new/good used.

And if you do take the door off put masking tape around the edge of the hinge on the door pillar to mark where it is to save a lot of farting around when you put it back .also toss those crappy Phillips head screws and go buy some set screws with Allen key socket cap heads .....you will thank me for this suggestion once you try to remove those Phillips head screws .:eagerness:

My Jule frame came back to me with the allen head screws and it's definitely an improvement. I also used all-thread screws for the motor mounts and it was a piece of cake to line up the motor mounts to the frame mounts.

it's not the age, its the rust. Even allen heads suck to remove when they have been rusted in place.
Yes but you can a whole lot more torque with a Allen key socket than some old pozidrive screwdriver , especially when your the sixth guy that's had a go at them with the wrong tools .

That's why every toolbox should have an impact driver and an assortment of bits. It makes getting out those hinge screws sooo easy. And when putting them all back in .... I use a cordless drill with about 7" or 8" of a big philips screw driver that I cut the handle off of.

I have one in my arsenal of tools but only use in desperation and if I am not concerned about damaging anything else .
Going at it with a BFH is not my idea of fun , I prefer to use a little more care and finesse .

If you have a little time, use 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone as a penetrant (the best) let it soak for a few days. use a sharp pic and clean the paint from around the pozi screws ( paint will act as a glue, you need all the help you can get freeing the screws) I use a Snap On pozi drive screwdriver and a large cresent (adjustable) wrench or my pozi drive bit in a socket and 3/8 drive handle should do it without damage to the screws. Main thing here is brute strength without having the bit come out of the screw. Replacement pozi screws are different FYI (very slightly larger head ) and sometimes will protrude from the hinge. Try to save the originals if they are perfect . The screws only protrude out the tapping plates a little bit, once you get it turning they will usually come free

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions; I discussed the actual rebuilding of the door hinges with an individual located in VA who specializes in hood and door hinge rebuilding for the muscle car restoration people; It turns out he has done Healey hinges and has been successful in removing the pins and boring out the pin hole and installing bronze oilite bushings. The next step is machining a pin from hardened steel to replace the original.............Sounds impressive. This fall I will be removing the door and sending him my left front door hinges to rebuild ! I will follow up with the results when this project is completed,

Thanks,
John

I'm probably not the only one on this Forum who would appreciate contact info for this individual (assuming he wants more business).
