BJ8 PhI ; #25805; Fuel Pump

I would like to purchase a spare fuel pump for my PhI BJ8. I have the original fuel pump that I had when I purchased the car in 1997. I have attached two pics below. Is this the new SU square bodied fuel pump? Is the mounting plate part of the pump.

No it isn't the square body pump. Your car uses the same pump as an MGB. You have the correct mounting plate.

So part # 377-042, from Moss @ $169.95 will do the job. That's cool. Let me ask you, are you familiar with Brinkerhoff Moving & Storage in Harrisburg, Pa. Spent the summer of 1970 being a pack mule for them back in the day.

My phase 1 is 25508. It has the square SU pump. I cannot tell from the picture if yours looks like mine. Moss list square pump to 28224. Rebuild you pump. Much cheaper. and easy.

After studying my picture it looks like I have the Part #377-260 mounting bracket and the Part#377-161 SU fuel pump for BJ8's from 28225. Is there a size difference between pump #377-042 and pump # 377-161?

Change that old dog for the electronic version of the original and you don't need a spare pump . And yes it still ticks just like the original . Both my running cars have them and one is over 10yrs old now and never an issue .

Having my BJ8P1 since new, I replaced the square bodied fuel pump in the early 1990s just because it was old and a friend gave me a very good deal on a rather new SU (like yours) he no longer needed. Since then I have cleaned and adjusted the points and adjusted the diaphragm and it never missed a beat all these years.

My suggestion is to rebuild the pump you have and consider the installation of a TVS diode and I expect you will have great service from your present pump for quite a long time to come.

By the way, if an electronic fuel pump craps out and leaves you stranded your only alternative is to replace it. If a points pump stops, most of the time you will be able to get it going.

Count your blessings and carry a spare just in case because when the electronic pump fails there's no bringing them back to life.

By the way, before I learned about the TSV (at less then 45 cents), I joined 2 other guys out of Origen to design a optical trigger for the pump with no touching parts. Although it was created to have no trigger ware and last for ever, it had no tick and I like the tick. When learning about the TSV, it made no sense to continue and now carry it as my spare.

Sure, but I've tried them all: points, power transistor and TVS diode (Dave wrote the schematic for the power transistor mod, but learned that, ironically perhaps, while the transistor mod limited current and metal transfer/pitting of the points there wasn't enough current to clean the points). Didn't have much luck with the TVS diode--ordered them from England--and, now, it appears replacement points are crap like some other electronic components.

Paranoid, yup. Had too many failures. Now, after having to flatbed my BJ8 home 1,000 miles after my water pump blew I carry a spare one of those, too. Oh, and a spare Pertronix. Thinking about getting a spare generator, and ...

Your choice, and fine if you stay close to home, or at least close to civilization. Some of the places I drive a tow truck might be a day or two away, if you can get one at all, and there aren't any hotels nearby. I'm often out of cellphone range anyway. I can swap a fuel pump out--one of a Healey's most common failure modes--in 20 minutes (generally quicker than you can get a tow).

My BJ8P1 has the old style mount where the pump sits longitudinal rather than horizontal. I don't know why. This did present an opportunity to mount a backup pump. I figured if I was going to carry a spare pump, I might as well go ahead and mount it.

I made an aluminum bracket with a backup pump that bolts to my original mount with no additional holes. I put a switch on the bracket that I can flip by reaching through the wheel well in the case of a primary (SU) pump failure. Pumps are serial in this order: fuel tank, fuel filter, new pump, old (SU) pump, fuel line, carburetor. No problem pulling fuel through the new pump and that ensures that it is always primed so you can do a hot switchover.

New pump is Holly HLY-12-426. Basically a Facet style pump in a different form factor. Mounted with rubber grommets at 45 degrees as per directions. It's probably quieter than the SU pump but it runs all the time.
