100M Illustration Started

Really nice , David! You may have said in another post...when are you getting to the BJ8? I have a space on my workshop wall for one--high zoot version, please. Don't forget about the wee Bugeye Sprite, also!

BJ8 is about 3 cars right now or about 2 months (or so) out. Bugeye is also on my schedule but a little further down the road.

And the final "standard" edition 100M illustration. This one will be available in the black and white scheme only, no options. A Collector's Edition version is available in choice of exterior/interior colors (including the Reno Red over Black shown here) with available options including Raydyot mirrors, cockpit coping to match interior color, bumper delete option, Lucas SLR 7000 or 576 spot lamps, manufacturer's plate with car number, and few other options to help those interested customize their artwork.

I'm going to take a short break to finish up a TR6 illustration (I know, I know...sacrilege) I've been working on then will get to the BN1, BN2, etc.

Orders for the 100M may be placed here: https://planbillustration.com/product/austin-healey-100m-lemans-limited-edition-illustration/ with files going to printer early next week, delivery to follow.

David, looks great and I'm glad you are going with white over black as that is how mine was originally painted. Only question/concern I have is the way the lower color curves at the top front. I thought they were painted as the 100S, going forward to the wheel arch. I have a 1956 Road & Track road test that shows it that way.

Nope. On the BN2, the top of the front wheel arches were raised; about 1.5" IIRC. Because of this, if the lower paint line went straight it would end below the top of the arch, and look improper; hence, the curve.

Bill Meade, curator of the 100M Registry, sells a template for the proper curve, but your car has to be rated 'Registry Certified,' which is a step above 'Owner Certified' (which only requires the BMIHT cert). We jumped through the hoops and sprung for the template, only to be informed by the late, great Rich Chrysler that the curve is the same as that on the 6-cyl cars (I think he got a chuckle over that).

No explanation for the R&T article, except that it might have been a BN1, repainted or ...

That makes sense. My car was all white when purchased by my dad in '63. I only found the black lower when stripping it for a repaint in the mid-70's. Don't recall taking notice of the pattern at the wheel arch.

I wonder what came first, the curve in the 100M paint or the design of the 100-6 fender?

As it would happen, I used Bill's template to draw the paint curve...shortly after I redrew the wheel well opening to the BN2 size (thank you Reid). And I am real glad I didn't have to try and explain the R&T article...

I'm gonna take a SWAG that when Big Healeys went from 4-cyl to 6-cyl only the chassis and body were lengthened; somewhere between 2-3" (or slightly more; I've seen various numbers). AFAIK, the wheel arches weren't changed; but they did carry through the swage line to about 1.5"--too lazy to measure it on my BJ8--with the same curve but continued alongside and behind the front wheel arches.

I'm pleased to announce, through an arrangement with Bill Meade, a portion of every sale of the 100M prints (standard or Collector's Edition) will be contributed to the World-wide 100M LeMans Registry.

Thought I'd post of a couple of recent samples of the 100M prints. A Reno Red 100 without bumpers, with 60-spoke wheels, and SLR 7000 spot lamps and the OEW over Lobelia Blue car with shortened exhaust, Lucas 576 spot lamps, and a couple of additional custom touches. Amazing how different the 100 looks in a solid color. Both a re nice examples of the Collector's Edition prints.

A couple more examples of recent 100M illustrations. First one I've done with the windscreen in the upright position.
