Why carry spares?

I've carried a spare water pump at times and have considered acquiring a spare dynamo to carry on the the annual, extended (3-4K miles) trip.

You know the old saying about never needing the spares you carry. I have a dual-element fuel pump and have never had to use the back-up. Which is just fine with me!
 
I might need to consider some spares. I always considered my spare being my phone, but where we're moving to, cell service is spotty at best. Maybe a sat phone. :eagerness:

Some of the spares I carry have been used to help others who broke down at club events. I carry a spare distributor fitted with Jeff Schlemmer's condenser, rotor and good points with several different connectors on the primary wire and several backup good rotors.

One of my friends has a Facet pump plumbed with fittings for the stock Healey fuel lines.

Bob,
Have you ever considered having a spare alternator setup to be used only for your trip? Seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to engineer.

My car's still positive ground--fitting an alternator would be difficult on the road. Slapping a spare dynamo (generator) in would be a piece of cake, compared to, say, fitting another water pump.

I have a positive ground alternator that I bought and never used (switch to negative ground). If you need one let me know.
