OIL sprayed on the under hood-TOP oil filler indaghed

During my firsts road tests of the car, I have find that some oil is sprayed on the hood RX side, This occur when the rev are from 3500-4000rpm, but not when engine are stationary and hood open.I have siliconed also the two plates on the head cover.

I have changed
the engine oil sump exhaust gas configuration,from filter IMGP2151.jpg to the classic pipeIMGP2171.jpg The TOP oil filler is NEW, and I revert to the OLD in very bad condition (rubber is broken)
IMGP2174.jpgIMGP2175.jpgmeasurement are the same, and all appear correct.
During my last long trip, with the oldest Top, oil was NOT sprayed, little traces on the head cover lip.
But this can be due that engine oil was a little overfilled (erratic value of oil radiator capacity) NOW the oil level is exactly at the sign of MAX dipstick
I will attempt a new trip with the NEW top, in the actual conditions, to control if oil spray or not.​
any suggestion??

Andrea, If I understand your comments, it is something that I have been worried about as well because i also have changed the crankcase vent configuration to removing the hose from the rear air filter to installing a smaller round filter on the " T " fitting at the top of the valve cover. I have kept the hose in place between the " T " fitting and the side tappet cover. But I believe there are flaws in both designs. Maybe a search of my previous post about PCV ventilation will explain my concerns with the old configuration and my concerns with just putting a filter at the " T". In short there is no real circulation in either configuration and the top hose is working as a two way street and it will allow some pressure to build. My rear carb with the hose attached would get some oil contamination which proved to me that oil was being drawn out of the valve cover. These engines when used before Healey, had road draft tubes. Maybe Donald Healey's idea of sticking the hose into the rear carb was the best solution of the time, in leu of a road draft tube or a full PCV valve system. Dave.

NOW,after more than one liter of good oil loss, and a lot of paper used to cleaning the under part of the hood i have finally find the cause of my nightmare
On my valve cover -recently chromed- there are a micro fracture (probably due to a dent repair before the chrome process) very hard to find, I have siliconed it with a little amount of silicon
and the loss of oil disappeared- my engine bay is now perfectly clean

My rear carb with the hose attached would get some oil contamination which proved to me that oil was being drawn out of the valve cover.

IF This is the case the "T" fitting may just be screwed down into the valve cover too far and is being fed oil by the baffel inside which is directly below the end of the "T" fitting. This allows the oil to be sucked into the "T" fitting, hose and rear carb..?
 
I've attached a pic of the small air filter that I have put on the 'T' fitting at the rear of my valve cover. I have driven the car about 500 miles with this arrangement and I am very happy with the results. There has been no oil appearing on the filter element as yet and surprisingly I also have no oil dripping from my rear main seal anymore as well. It is not marking it's territory anymore. I have a cast aluminum valve cover that has no baffles. Dave.

Andrea, Sorry in my speed read of your last reply I missed your point that you have found the crack. I was gooing to suggest that the valve cover gasket was not sealed well. I was going to suggest that you apply RTV Black to a new gasket. It is alittle hard to remove when the time comes but it does seal very, very well. ..... Glad you found your problem. Dave.

As I type this it is 6C where you live--that does not sound like winter to me!! It is -16C where I am, with about 8 inches of snow. Get the Healey out!
 
just to RETURN on the MAIN argument
Recently I am also interested in the NORTON Commando Classic Bike
One of the problems here are a over pressure of 2 Psi in the engine basement- the result is a consistent Oil Leaks (and dirt pants) the optimal solution was a breather valve (fitted on Chrysler and Ford cars)

Hi Andrea,

Take a look at the Oil Catch Can I built and installed on my Healey. The unit is presently installed without a PCV but was designed to eliminate any oil vapor/blow-by from entering the intake manifold (with a PCV) or rear carburetor (without a PCV). Either way, the unit can be easily removed to empty as it sits on a platform with a small leading lip and held in place by the screw that holds wiring harness bracket and can be easily eliminated without trace.

The appearance said that DW sump are more deeper than the original, but I think that finally the differences are not so big, and the same quantity of oil can be maintained also with DW sump

(*) I have reduced at 6 1/2 Liter when I have the oil spray problems - but I have controlled the level every running day

Andrea, Does your little air filter have oil in it? Does your rear main seal on the crank drip? I'm wondering if you have excessive pressure in the crankcase. I'm wondering why it is spraying up on the hood. You can have alot of leaks around the valve cover or the head and not have oil spraying. Is the oil on the hood back near the rear of the engine? If oil was getting on the fan i would understand it spraying around but I have had oil leaks before and never had it on my hood.
