OIL sprayed on the under hood-TOP oil filler indaghed

Hi Vette
I have leak from the upper part of the valve cover, I find oil on the nail all around the base of the valve cover , on the hood it will be sprayed by my Texas fan
on the upper rear part of the hood, I have find traces of (little) leak near the "T" oil pipe
No leaks on the head or on main engine block
before the installation of the Oil Catch Can I have the rubber pipe from "T" completely free opened -in the under part of the chassis
The valve cover under part is sealed by 1 silicone gasket + 1 chork gasket ,NO traces of leaks all around
After the discovery of one micro fracture on the front of the valve cover (sealed) the situation is well improved and the leak have a significant reduction
BUT i will continue in the investigation- the phenomenon happen on highway at 3500-4000 or more rpm, so is very hard to find,
no leaks appear on shop hi rev tests-
Due the winter bad weather - actually we have a week completely raining and 3 mt of snow on the Alps - I am forced to stay in garage
Cheers

Just jumped onto this thread and only quickly looked through the information.

Andrea have you had a good look at the timing case and the oil seal (if possible) behind the harmonic balancer. I suppose if there is no evidence on the block these areas are tight.

I guess that all the tappet covers including the dynamo plate are tight.?

The sump is tight? I checked mine after the rebuild and a couple of driven miles and retightened them up.

Can you find another valve cover - even just to try it?

Bob

Hi Andrea, You have done quite of bit of investigating and from your last post it appears that the leak is up near the top. But as Bob said, make sure the leak isn't from the front of the engine. Some more thoughts. Could the valve cover have more small (very micro) cracks. Also what about the valve cover cap, could the oil be coming from that. I know we have talked about PCV systems before, and I don't remember exactly what you have, but if it is a non-PCV system the valve cover cap should be vented. If I understand correctly you have two gaskets ( 1-silicone & 1-cork) under your valve cover flange mating surface. I have never seen a need for that but you seem very confident that it is not leaking there. But you say that the oil is laying on the top surface of the valve cover mating flange. and that it is all around the perimeter of the valve cover flange. Wow, for oil to be laying there but not on the head at the mating surface of the gasket is very unusual indeed. My bet is a combination of Cap, Tee, and cracks. Can't think of anything else right now except, Use those beautiful Alps and go Skiing. Dave.

Hi Bob
I have one (my)oldest valve cover with no crack BUT I love the chromed (with a lot of problems) my leak are sure from it, but i am
stubborn as a mule

Hi Andrea, ...... Use those beautiful Alps and go Skiing. Dave.
Hi Dave thanks for suggestion,
in effect the spray is now so limited that I can sure survive with it,
Now I have added a rubber washer under the "T" and strength again the two bolts on the valve cover and the 16mm pipe from the "T" to the Oil Catch Can

A good excuse to have a ride on the AH, the first day of sun.
Cheers

Andrea, do you take your Healey out on winter days? I don't baby any of my cars but I try to avoid putting them on salt covered roads. But I can imagine the beautiful drives you must have over there. I was in the Alps some years ago visiting in Switzerland. Then we took a holiday at Ascona on the north end of a very large lake. It was beautiful there. I wish I had my Healey there to drive the mountain roads. , Dave.

Andrea,
Have you looked to see how much oil is coming up through the rocker shaft and rockers? You can tell easily by how looking down through the filler cap. At idle, oil should just seep out of the top of the rockers. If it's squirting at idle, it's spraying at high rpms and will come out any small hole in the rocker cover (like the rivets that hold the metal tags).
