No grumpiness I hope, as like it or not this is reality. Just got this pointed out yesterday. Beloit College releases an annual "Mindset List" to faculty and staff to help them understand the worldview of the Freshmen. This is the class of 2016 worldview

very interesting - some is sad, most is just fascinating.

SHEESH! I'm so OLD!

My cousin sent it to me.... I think she's trying to send me a not-so-subtle message.

It is interesting to read something like this and compare it to when we were that age. When I was finishing high school Nixon was in the news, and not for having died. Jane Curtin was an "ignorant sl*t" on SNL, and the young veterans having trouble returning to society had done their time in Vietnam. I had 8 tracks, fuzzy TV signals and cable was something farm friends used to tie things up.

Yep. Been feeling like it might be time to retire (as the cultural gap between myself and students is getting great). Besides, I'm tired. :wink-new: Full-time travel sounds better (if we can afford it).

Not to worry guys, if things go right, y'all will be dead before me. How'd you like to still be around in 40 years? Hmmm???? I don't like the way things are now much less then. I've always said those little fockers are gonna run us over.

Sheeesh, and the ~I'LL~ be the "old man" like Tercy was... scarey thought boys and girls...scarey thought indeed.

Hey...that's my prodigal they are talking about!

Not only do I not recognize many of the things that the new freshmen do, I don't recognize a bunch that their parents did!

Honestly, my freshman students always seem so old to me. I mean, OK, they're engineering students.....but still; when I was their age, I hadn't a care in the world. Todays college kids I see seem so cautious and inhibited. Maybe all the internet /smart-phone use impedes their personalities.

There is something to that - read recently that the average College student is under the same level of stress as a mental institution resident in the '50s

That's all across the board now, well, almost all across. Shoulda seen the ME majors at UNO in the late 90's, nuthin' "typical" engineerin' about them. I worked in the tow tank for the N.A.M.E dept. When the guys saw our 100,000 gallon wave tank complete with side windows, they wanted to have a naked womens volleyball tournement in it....seriously....

And they prob'ly coulda pulled it off...

That was certainly food for thought. I remember when making a 'long distance' phone call was an event. Now I skype with abandon. So much in my lifetime that it boggles my mind. Interestingly one of my greatest joys is simply driving my Healey wilth no radio, no power steering, no power brakes and geez, no windows. Would I give up technology - NO!!!

Many many years ago, my then-girlfriend was from a VERY prominent famliy in a major metropolitian area (If I said the name or place folks would know exactly the family I was talking about). She had not only the first cell phone I've ever used, but the first one I've ever seen. First thing I did was call EVERYBODY while driving down the interstate, "DUDE, I'm inna car goin' down the road!!!" All you could do back then was make calls, look at what a phone can do now...

I don't miss her or the phone much...but I DO miss her 30 million dollar trust fund...:frown:

Oh well, fun while it lasted....

Makes even me feel old.

The big difference is they don't care about cars, or at least a much smaller percentage of them do, its not a status symbol, or an extension of themselves, or even a necessaity, more and more kids put off getting their license, TEENAGE BOYS THAT DON"T WANT TO GO GET THEIR LICENSE AT THE VERY FIRST OPPORTUNITY THEY CAN FER CHRISSAKES! I remember my birthday was on a Saturday or Sunday, I was told you get get your license in advance, but in fact you could take the test and qualify for the license, but you didn't actually get it until your birthday, and if your birthday was on a weekend you had to wait until Monday. So my hopes were up then dashed.

Many many kids wait to get their license til they are 18 or 19, or until they just have to, freind's bought their 16 year old a new Honda Accord, he doesn't want to drive it, as in never, scare him or something. Can anyone beside me think back to when they were 16 and think that this just sounds totally crazy?

Getting back closer to topic, oh yes, my parents wrote letters to people because long distance was "so expensive" 3 networks and public television on the black and white tube TV.

I turned 52 this week, I think I stayed up with everything until about 5 years ago or so, embraced computers, e-mail and the internet, but I have stagnated or gotten tired of learning new things or something, could give a hoot about social media, and not sure why you need an "app" for everything when you can just go to the website for the companies services. I am starting to see more and more commercials, where I am not sure what they are selling and not sure who is elling it, but think maybe they are supposed to be famous or a celebrity.

By the way, my son is one of those class of 2016 kids, he does drive (bought him a 96 Subaru with a 5 speed manual). I think of him as constantly tied to his phone, but have talked to and seen other kids who are much worse, When he wants to learn something he goes to u-tube to see a video about it, and like they said on the report, he never listens to the radio even though he likes music.

I was gonna add stuff like
They've never known Alex Trebeck to have a moustash.
What's a "word processor"?
It's an electronic typewriter? what's that?
You mean you actually had to CRANK up your car windows?
Explain to me again what a vent window was for.
Why on earth would they put a headlight dimmer button on the floor?
A three on the what?

And riding a bicycle without a helmet has always been dangerous and motorcycles have always been safe. :highly_amused:

A positive I will say, most of the kids these days are better about wearing their seatbelts, not drinking and driving, and not smoking (cigarettes) than my crowd was back in the day.
