TR4/4A Help on upper radiator support rod parts - what is required on TR3 compared to TR4?

Hi all,

My newly purchased (and newly running!) TR3B is missing the upper radiator support rods, Moss part 850-260. On the Moss site, the diagram shows a couple of washers, a nut, and a grommet. However they specify TR4A only for the washer, grommet, rubber washer. TR3B is only called out for the nut 848-850, but the description seems more to describe the lower radiator mount to frame rather than the nut in the illustration.

I called Moss, they weren't sure. Has anyone ordered this part(s) for a TR3B, or know which parts are required for a TR3B? https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29121#54

thanks

The TR3 (which includes TR3B and early TR4) did not use the washers, just the two nuts (per rod, 4 total). Won't hurt anything if you want to add them, but they don't seem to be needed either. Might possibly cut down on noise and vibration a tiny bit, but you'll never notice it IMO.

BTW, the rods are curved, not straight as shown in the diagram, to pass over the horns.

Looks like they simply repeated that disclaimer on all those parts even though the last bit only applies to the lower mount bolts.

If you have the rods then I think everything else are ordinary hardware store items. I guess I added a couple of washers but no grommets:

Hardware store nuts would work just fine, but the originals were shorter than standard nuts. And very few hardware stores seem to carry "jam" nuts (although you can get them at fastener specialty houses and places like MMC).

The rods were supported in holes on the TR3 and the early TR3As (like mine) whereas later TRs as shown in the photo above of the red TR show the rods to be in "U" slots as opposed to through holes in the TR3s and early TR3As. Otherwise, I don't know of any other differences.
