Found this the other day in my parts bin. Does it need a Whitworth or special socket. It seems like it requires a socket that is only 3/4" long to make it work? Most sockets I have are way too long. What am I missing?

Same one on eBay (without parts)
Maybe the socket gets lost easy, like the nr 10 ones

Newer version ; Gunson Clikadjust Tappet Adjuster G4094
See specs; 1/2"D for any size lock nut.
Looks like it needs an additional socket

Thanks for responding. This is even more of a puzzle? Where can you buy a 1/2" drive socket that needs to be 3/4" long in order to adjust the valves on a TR3???

These things have been around forever and never really gained popularity. If you use one, you still need three hands to use it easily, just as with the screwdriver, wrench, and feeler gauge. So, as I see it, it doesn't solve a problem.

Never seen any but a lathe could easily shorten one, or a grinder, but that would probably take a looong time.

Interesting tool but I think a box end wrench ,screwdriver and checking with feeler is easier.

Exactly. That's the way i I normally adjust the valves. I remember buying this tool off ebay years ago. Now that it turned up I thought I would try it out. I dont know if there actually is a 3/8 drive socket with a 1/2" opening where the socket is 3/4" long ???? Most of my sockets are 1@1/2" in length. You would need a socket that is...... 3/4"in length.... in order for the socket opening to fit over the adjustment nut? I don't think there is such a socket. Strange.

I think the tool was made in England??
I also have a similar tool for adjusting the valve clearance. For me, it’s easier to use a screwdriver and wrench.
By the way, the one I have was made in the USA.

Did you ever try using this tool? If so what socket did you use? Like you I just use a wrench and screwdriver but the inability to find an appropriate socket is what baffles me?
I haven’t used it in years but I think I used a 1/2” (3/8” drive) regular socket.
