MGB Automotive Machine shop

Hi all, I mostly just read posts but I've hit a rough patch with my MGB. So here it goes; I've got a 1977 MGB Roadster all stock. I have her taken apart installing new wiring and rebuilt transmission as well wanting to rebuild the engine. I have not been able to find a machine shop for the engine in over a year. Does anybody know of a shop/person willing to do work on an MGB engine in middle Tennessee or within a reasonable drive (few hours okay)? I've called and visited several shops in the area but I must be from another planet because of the remarks and looks I get. Most don't even know what an MGB is. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Check with JD's British Cars in Nashville. He can most likely point you in the right direction.

Is it automotive machine shop work you are looking for or complete engine rebuilding services?

Do you consider a 4-5 hour drive reasonable?

If you don’t mind driving a half day in each direction, try these:

Hap Waldrop
Acme Speed Shop
Taylors, S.C.
864-370-3000

Bart Miller
Roadspeed Garage
Cleveland, GA.
706-348-6352

Sorry to say, I don’t know anyone closer to you in central Tennessee.

If they can’t help with the work, perhaps they can refer you to another source closer to home.

I will definitely look into these. I frequent Chattanooga. Both are doable so I’ll call this week. Thank you again.

Don't know about Bart but Hap is the British Car Engine guru. It is basically all he does.

Most towns that have small time dirt track racing are close to a general automotive engine machine shop. I used Andrews Engine Service in Andrews, NC. I used them for crank machining, head/valve work, cam measurement, crack checking and balancing. All necessary dimensions are available, so there is no mystery.

I went through the same process recently and found one close to me. They did all the machining for my 3-main MGB engine going into my MGA. I am located in SE Tennessee and the shop itself is on Hwy 27 N in Sale Creek TN. Central Machine Works 423 243-8267. They do not rebuild the motors just the machining but that is all I wanted. Sale Creek is north of Chattanooga and south of Dayton TN. You can come from Murfreesboro on 70 and then Hwy 8. Bruce

Thank you, this is perfect. I am frequently in Chattanooga. Will give them a call.

Call ahead and ask for Chris (the owner) to make sure he is there when you bring the motor. You will need to talk with him to map out the details of the build. Doing this with Chris will also get you a preliminary quote. Bruce

Specialized British/European shops are your best bet; general shops often don’t know MGBs. Examples near Middle TN: British Motorworks and British Car Specialist in Nashville.
Classic car clubs/forums (like the MG Club of Middle TN) can recommend trusted machinists.
Consider shipping the engine to shops experienced with MGBs, e.g., A-M Classic Engines (TN/AL) or Bradley British Motors (KY)
