TR6 ‘74 TR6 Trans removal

Hi folks -
In the middle of removing my trans. Everything is unbolted and ready for the removal. Question: the top three bolts where the trans connects to the motor are studs. One came out when removing the nut. The other two are in tight (nuts are off) and there is not enough thread to put on an extra nut to break them loose. I’m concerned about damaging the studs and creating more problems. Should these studs stay in and be used as a guide for the reinstall?

Those 3 studs must be from someone other than the factory. There are supposed to be nuts and bolts all around
There are, however 2 locating dowels that need to be in place in the rear engine plate... They are indicated by the yellow arrows that Bob Danielson shows in this page from his website.

I can not attest to the three top bolts or studs on a TR6. But that was the standard for the TR3&4 engines. And exactly as you stated. Both separating the engine and trans and putting it back together.
Some owners have temporarily substituted even longer studs as an assist for putting the units back together. Instead of studs I used longer bolts and cut the heads off. Then once together you can use either studs or bolts.

This video may help you. Steve is a well known triumph enthusiast and mechanic by trade.

As suggested a 3” stud at the top will help you relocate the gearbox when refitting. You can literally hang the gear box off it and slide it home into the clutch.


This is my 3a with a 6 clutch and you can see the longer stud to hang the gearbox on. It’s a cut down long bolt filed so I can get a spanner /wrench on it to get it out.

All same principle on the 3a / 4 / 6

Strange. Certainly appears to be the trans’ first removal. Original owner (whom I bought it from years ago) never had any work done. Guess the best solution is to leave the remaining 2 studs in place.
Any thoughts on best clutch replacement kit?
