This does come in handy when you need to pull down a large tree.(true story from the 70's)

:D I have heard it called "Bull low". The reason I'm curious about this is I told another TR3 guy that I had a 6 box and he said " Do you ever take off from a stop in 2nd gear?" It had not occurred to me so I tried it and it is doable but sometimes having a real low first gear baffles the guys in the big half tons at the stoplight when the light turns green. Anyone heard of Austin Healy sports cars having an earlier model gearbox that had the first gear blanked off at the gear shift ??

Yes Karl, the big Healeys came with a 4 speed sourced from a lorey. First gear was blocked
and an OD added to make it OK. You have never seen a 3000 blow up a diff either(from a truck too)
Mostly Healeys were over built to the hilt.

A friend of mine said the heat from his big Healey once melted his running shoe? Another thing I heard about big Healeys is the exhaust system was too low to the ground....other than that there is really not anything else to complain about ...they were great cars.

Yes if the heat shields were damaged( under the drivers floor),I can personally confirm the melted
shoes!!

No, but the gap in TR6 gear ratio to 2nd is less. The TR3 box should be quicker off the line but the rpm will drop more when shifting to 2nd. The TR3 box has a non synchromesh 1st while the TR6 has sycho's on all gears, this is probably the reason most people would make the swap.

So the TR6 gear box in a TR3 would make the car a bit faster from a standing start than the stock TR3 box, correct?
Yes my TR3a with an early 6 box will accelerate 0-64ft in 2.35 seconds on the flat. Modern single seaters with launch control do it in about 2.
The hills are a little slower.
I tried to do a comparison with this video.
