Most foam filters require some type of oil to catch airborne particles. Otherwise they just slip right through the big pores in the foam.
I just re-read the AC labels on my filters last night and they say to clean in petrol and re-oil using (clean) engine oil.
ITG Filters highly recommends a product called Rock Oil Factory Eco Foam Air Filter Fluid. They used to recommend a different brand until they tested Rock Oil and found that the foam itself lasted longer.

The best of both worlds is to use the OE air strainers with a foam element fitted over them
oiled as per John Deere recommends. The part # is M 70127 . Cheap and OTC. You get to the car
show and slip them off till you leave. They seem to last around 5 or 6 years, but at 3.50$ each keep
a spare set on hand

I put a set of these on the 250's HS6's, un-oiled. So far so good.

Karl if you have carbon on intake side ( your other thread) and it’s from carb backfire foam filters can catch fire so sort your other issues first before refitting filters

The K&N which those replace (according to the ad) were also intended to be oiled prior to use. K&N made their own oil specifically for cotton-gauze filters.
Dry is a lot better than no filter at all, but oiled will be even better.
