That's ok, it's something that he's familiar with because he lives there. I just wasn't familiar with that acronym, even though I have been to Halifax and other parts of NS (beautiful place by the way)

Sad to hear about the Nova Scotia fires. We here in New Jersey have one growing as we speak. Approximately 5-6000 acres. Thankfully it is mostly in a state forest but still growing. Unknown cause. Everyone should be very cautious this season. Pray that they are contained forthwith.

Rant alert!

That's a sore point here, I assure you. It stands for "Halifax Regional Municipality". Back in the 90's, the provincial government forced two proud and thriving municipalities (Dartmouth and Bedford) that were adjacent to the city of Halifax, along with most of the surrounding county, to amalgamate with it into a single, ponderous entity. A ponderous entity requires a ponderous name, so the resulting city was officially named the Halifax Regional Municipality. Or, in lazy mouth, "HRM". The affluent town of Bedford has lost its' tax base into the maw of Halifax bureaucracy, and proud and scenic "City of Lakes" Dartmouth has been stripped of its' heritage and civic installations and turned into a run-down dumping ground for Halifax's unwanted. The only thing that they couldn't strip was the lakes, so they've left them to grow algae. And this giant streamlining and cost-saving measure has ended up costing everyone more, and making the entire operation a lumbering disaster. But we did get a Municipal Poet Laureate. And we're really good at raising colourful flags. :flush:

We'll keep ourt fingers crossed for you too. Hope they do knock it down.

We're getting a reprieve starting last night with a week of rain and northern winds, thank heavens. The other fire, the 45,000+ acre fire in our western zone, has led to us bringing in help from all over, water-bombers from Colorado and firefighters from, amazingly, Costa Rica. We has no idea forest fires were a thing in the humid tropics. Our fires are on the smaller side by western standards, but because we're a small province, the damage is disproportionally high. In particular, the fire close to us is burning in the suburbs of the municipality, so we've lost housing and businesses. If the wind had changed direction at the wrong time, it could have (and still could) burned through a heavily-populated area. Our local cartoonist has put out his take on people illegally burning, and there's a fund-raising T-shirt circulating with the mayor's memorable quote: "This is a clear violation of the NO STUPID policy if ever there is one."

And we've already had two blatant violators slapped with $25,000 fines, even after all this.

Sorry for the out-of-sequence post. When I launched my rant, #20 was the last post on my screen , even after starting off hitting the refresh button. Makes me look like a gaping dolt...

That T shirt could be applicable for a variety of things! Everyone should get one!

By the way, just an aside, the Smokey the Bear campaign started in 1944 when the US Forrest Service started the campaign. A bear cartoon was chosen as the mascot. A couple years later, a small black bear cub was found badly burned but alive after climbing a tree to escape a forrest fire near Capitan. The fire fighters rescued him and named him Smokey and he became the living mascot for the Smokey the Bear campaign. Capitan New Mexico is not far from where we live and we often go camping there. There is a Smokey the Bear museum and historical park in the small town of Capitan.

Are the tee shirts available on the net? I didn't have any luck finding a web site.

Welcome! Same, into Land Rovers, MINIs, Jaguars, Triumph.

I'm not familiar with Twitter, so I got the link from someone who is. Don't know if this helps.

If you want one but they don't ship international, I'd be fine with receiving it and forwarding it as a personal package.
Steyn,
Thanks for the link. Money goes the Canadian Red Cross. Ordered one; the web site didn't balk at my US address.

Went for a drive today,& was amazed at how hazy it was.
Smoke from the fires up North.
