Used to be the maternal side family tradition. Bushels of tomatoes, many dozens of Mason jars. My dad motorized the tomato puree strainer, the whole process became like a production line with everyone having a "workstation." The end product was shared among the six families, enough to last for the year. Dad's dad had orchards, that was always good for canned peaches, pears, plumbs. The "fruit cellar" was always stocked.
I truly miss those times. The food was wonderful, certainly. But the camaraderie of the cohesive family is what made it special.
