Big day for Lilly yesterday as she was officially accepted in the state of Delaware. she passed all her tests and recv'd her diploma. (well actually her registration and tags)
For a graduation present, i bought her a set of tires. So when we got home she went back on the lift until i can get these new tires on.

it is the shame. the tires on her probably don't have 500 miles on them. but the date code reads 1999. uuugh.

hahaha, thanks. does the journey ever end?

was under the car today and the pinion seal on the rear is leaking. i did not replace when i had the rear out because it did not show any signs of leaks. oh well.

also the engine drain tap under the carbs is leaking. it is a new one from moss and i put the plug in it. i think it is leaking at the base washer. tightened it up some more today.

also have a drip coming from the bell housing vent hole. not sure if it is engine or gearbox... so this will be a "lets see how much it leaks".

Should you decide to replace rear pinion seal, also consider checking the flange for wear where the seal makes contact. Readi / speedi sleeve the flange to smooth the contact area. My car drips from the bell housing vent hole - there's always a "hanging drop" of oil here to curse at and surplus fuel from the manifold vent tubes. Galvanized drip pans are your friends. GONZO.

No, it doesn't end.

After you've driven it enough to get some darkness to the engine oil, it will be easy to tell.

well imediate concern is the coolant leak. it may be a freeze plug. they were all replaced when the block was tanked. not getting a lot but i did not see any leak at all the first few times i ran it. now there is about 10 drops over night.

i have tightened the drain tap on that side but still a little leak. hard to see exactly where it is coming from.

just got my new tires mounted and the wheels back on yesterday and it is still a bit chilly here so i have not done a real test drive of any distance. i may put on some warm clothes tomorrow and at least go get some gas in it.

There should be a fiber washer under the drain tap ... is it there? Also, these taps--like the one on the heater hose--can leak around the ball valve. A little lapping compound can help.

there is a washer. i have the plug in the tap so it should not leak around the valve. it is just hard to tell. i can not feel any wetness around it. and with the block being green there is no difinitive trail to follow.
i tried to wipe it all off yesterday and hopefully i will be able trace the fluid by feel. also ran the car for more than 20 minutes yesterday to see if maybe building some pressure might give me more of a clue. problem is then, i don't want to put my hand up there next to the exhaust manifold....

well no leak last night or so far after the test run today... who knows... just have to keep an eye on it.

test run today went pretty well. it is still kind of cold out so i did not go far. about 10 miles maybe.

car steering is lighter than i expected. certainly lighter than my TR6. i am running 30 psi in the tires and they are new. too much air?

checked the brake drums when i got home. the left rear was pretty hot to touch. the right rear was cool. so i backed the adjuster off one more notch on the left rear. i had adjusted both brakes up a notch because the brake pedal felt soft, or maybe better said, more travel than i liked. adjusting the rear brakes up a notch helped that a lot. so we will see how it goes after this adjustment.

ran a little warmer on the gauge than i expected. could be the gauge is off (going to check that tomorrow with my thermometer) and it could be i have some air in the system. going to try pulling the cap tomorrow and run it until it gets good and warm before i put the cap back on. maybe some air will bubble out.

also want to check the speedo against my old GPS unit on the next run.

car has good power and great low end power. it feels lighter and quicker than i expected. i tried the OD briefly and it seemed to go in and came back out as i would have expected. Kick down switch feels like it is adjusted where i would think it should be. Happy with that. at some point i would like to pull the plugs and see how they look. and of course check the valves hot.

drips.... well i had 4 or 5 below the rear. if that is all i get, the pinion seal can wait until fall. no coolant leak other than some coolant out the oveflow hose. i had just added some so i guess it was too much. there also seemed to be a few drips of oil under the gearbox. i am thinking maybe they came off the OD lever. i know that o-ring was leaking a little. but i could not see well enough to tell for sure. no oil out the bell housing vent hole... but that usually comes after the car sits a while and cools down. so guessing i will get a few drips there by tomorrow morning.

hopefully tomorrow is a little warmer so i can get a few runs in.
