John - I was thinking the same thing. Then I read that M-B actually built "SLR conversion kits" for the 190 SL during production. And even afterward, some owners were doing conversions on their own, including bigger engines. Changes included windscreen, doors, no roll down windows, bumpers, straking, etc.

Problem with the one in the Hemmings ad - there's so little detail, and only exterior shots (no engine), that there's no telling how it became an SLR. Price is ridiculous, even if it *were* an original 190 SLR. (the R = Rennwagen - German for race car)

Here's a couple 190 SLRs, but I think both were conversions.
