A survey: Why do we mess with old British cars?

M, D, O, and occasionally T when one of our other cars is on the fritz.

O = for my daughter, who is autistic / nonverbal -- the combination of the sensory she gets from the top-down driving and the various noises and vibrations mixed with her innate curiosity to go exploring roads she hasn't traveled usually leads to an ear to ear grin for her.

D. T. & O.

"Other" being simplicity, the ability to "Fix-I-Go." No diagnostic computer/software needed, hand tools and a 12V test light will usually suffice to get you where you need to go.

:iagree: That is one of the main reasons I selected T.

"I tell people it keeps me off the streets."

Do you have AAA for those times the Healey keeps you off the street?

M, D, n...and P...because I'm a glutton for punishment! :nana:

my wife teaches autistic blind children, (has for 30 years) & she never gives up, but yours is a novel approach.
of course this means I'll have to teach her how to drive the 3.

I'm glad your Daughter has fun! that must be worth a million $$ or three.

Oh, she does! Her first complete sentence that she ever formed other than one that starts "I want", was her pointing to a picture of my Sprite and saying "Go in car". It not only makes the purchase worth it, it makes every night I've spent tinkering on it worth it, too.

N M D Haven't had a chance to do any of the last since moving back to Montana in October.

Because they are fun to mess with, even more so when you cram big engines into them... I enjoy working on them more than my American cars

Never sell that car.

All the above and O (because they are there and need attention) ( because wife is annoying and garage is peaceful) (because I have to have something to do)

Just out of curiosity, I would like to tally the reasons why we waste time & money on these old quirky things.

appreciate your responses, in the form of :
(Pls. list multiple reasons in order of importance, or your own reasons)
D: for driver
S: for show (general)
C: for concours level show
N: for nostalgia
T: for transportation
I: for investment
M: for mechanical hobby or challenge
O: other

comments welcome.

For me:
N,D,M

just a follow up FYI:
no real surprises, either.

there were 24 responses(I could work with [hanging chads were thrown out])

Driving got the majority with 19 :79%. Response
Mechanical got 18. : 75%
Other got 11. : 46%
Note. Other included "fun". Which was mentioned in 3 or 13% of responses
nostalgia got 9 nods for 38% response rate
show got 3 for 13%. ( I thought there my be more, but this sample is a driving bunch)
transportation also got 3 for 13% response
Concours show level got no response

investment got a couple lol's

might have a substantial error rate here, but by the looks of it we are predominantly a driving, wrench turning bunch, harboring our own "other" reasons & some fond memories of the old days.

Guy - I wonder if there'd be differences, if the survey were given in specific marque forums here. Most things we read in Pub - only come from members who frequent the Pub!

A subset of a subset of a subset of a ...

You will get different responses by going to different sites and forums. Folks who restore MG pre war and T series cars do it mostly for a challenge and the love of the old square radiator cars, plus are more reluctant to modify these cars from their original factory build. They are much more expensive to buy and restore, so the the amount of folks restoring them is a much smaller group than later models. Everyone has his or her own reason for doing this and a lot of circumstances in ones personal life is in control. To put a tag on this, such as, A,B,C, 1,2,3, etc is too general for a direct answer. Go to different specific forums for more specific answers if that is your desire and more than likely the answers will change drastically. JMHO. PJ
