LHD Escorts

Out of curiosity, were the original rear wheel drive Escorts ever available in LHD? I know the Cortina and Capri were. I've seen a few pics in magazines of these cars recently, and I saw a real one driving through town a couple of months ago (white, Minilites, wheelarch blisters). All were RHD. Enquiring minds want to know.

Interesting question. Never thought about that before, I suppose that a lot depends on whether there were any made in Europe, and there had to have been. The competition-spec cars were all right-hook I beleive, as the competition department was (is?) in the UK.

Yes they were.Looked at one for sale almost a year ago.
They were made for export sales.

They were big ( I mean huge ) sellers in Germany, and were all LHD over there. The LHD market had a lot to do with the decision to build the Escort, as the German dealers were clamouring for a new small Ford. Mine is a 68 ( first year ) and it is designed to be either RH or LH. All the proper holes and attachment points are there for either way, just like the Lotus Elan's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

The Escort began as one of Fords 'World' cars. So there were probably more LHD cars built than RHD. Finding them in good shape is the real challenge.

Here is one that was in Denver a few years ago at the Colorado Conclave car show. You can't see it in the photo but this is a left hooker.

Mmmmm.

BDA

Bitchen car. Those came with an iron crank and not much over 100 hp in the street version.

Nothing but untapped potential.

..........and I really like the styling of those Mk1s, funny isn't it? I suppose if everyone liked the same things we'd all be driving Buicks.......

I don't like most or all Buicks built since 1986 either. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif IMHO, the last good buick was the Grand National, and T-type's.

I don't care much for the styling of MK I Escorts either. I have a strong preference for the MK II. neither were sold here, so its moot anyway, but they were raced and ralleyed to great success.

I really would like to build up an Anglia 105E. There are some really cool ones at 105speed.com

BDA in an Escort... yup. Just what I'd like to have in the driveway. The engine was closer to 150 than 105 in that trim, too. The Lotus 1600's were at 105, the S/E came in at 115, IIRC. BDA's were 140~150-ish. That li'l thing should haul. I like the Oscars bolted up to the nose too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
