Aloha All,
A couple weeks ago I posted about an engine problem, a burnt exhaust valve in #4 cylinder that kept happening. Since then the cylinder head was removed and confirmed the valve was badly erroded. Now the engine has been removed and torn dowm revealing other damage. The head of 4 piston was badly erroded on both sides perdicular to the long axis of the engine. The upper three rings were broken and the grooves for the rings badly damaged. Number 2 piston also had a broken compression ring. The tappet for #2 inlet valve was mushroomed and a few of the cam lobes were deeply pitted. The cam shaft bearings appeared to be wiped and need to be replaced. The crankshaft and bearings (main and rod) appear to be in good condition so hopefully only a polish is needed.
The car is mostly original, but will never be a concours type. I don't drive it hard so I'm not looking for high performance, the original 54 BHP is fine. So the rebuild will depend alot on what new parts are available and worth while improvements and up grades.
Does anyone has experience with the rear main seal conversion kit offered by Moss Motors? I'm wondering if it works that much better than the original to justify the cost.
Also since I need new pistons, it has been suggested that I use a "big bore" kit that would increase displacement to 1380 cc and uses 69 mm pistons. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. The current pistons are .060 over, but pistons may be available up to .120 over so a more stock rebuild seems possible. I won't know until the cylinders are measured and checked for roundness to determine if a rebore is needed.
Lastly, there have been many posts about poor quality cam shafts that fails rapidly. Any recommendations on good quality cams would be greatly appreciated.
