wire wheel hub splines

I'm looking for a little advice here. Yesterday while braking to an intersection I heard a dragon roaring from the area of my right front wheel. I suspected the brakes, but after pulling the wheel and checking the pads I realized that what had actually happened was that the wheel had spun on the hub. The splines on the hub are very worn, so it will need to be replaced. My question is whether this means the wheel is also scrap as a result. The splines aren't great, but don't seem as bad as the hub. Will putting this wheel on a new hub just increase the chances of ruining the new hub too? Anyone out there have experience in this area? Thanks.

From what I have heard, the worn splines on the wheel would cause those on a new hub to wear prematurely. Better to replace them both.

Aloha Keith,

Steve is correct, worn splines on one will eventually damage the other. If the hub splines spun in the wheel, the wheel splines must also be badly worn. A new hub spline and wheel seem to be the answer, if not I think you will replacing the wheel soon and a while later the hub. It might be a good idea to check the other wheels and hubs also.

And consider yourself fortunate... an MGB friend had this happen under hard braking and the stationary hub spun the knock-off off the wheel, followed by the wheel departing the car.

Thanks guys, that's pretty much what I had thought, I was just hoping I might be able to get away without having to buy a new wheel. Looks like it's time to see if there's enough change in the ole piggy bank to look at a set of chrome wheels. Thanks again for your thoughts.
