Spitfire What is a 1968 Spitfire worth?

My daughter's jeep into the local body shop for some rust repair. While there I saw a very familiar spitfire that I've seen over the past decade bringing around the local neighborhood. it belongs to the autobody shop owner.

It originally belonged to his father who bought it new and he inherited it however now since he's had his hip and knee replaced he can no longer drive it comfortably.

He has sorted the body and put a fresh coat of paint on it and he's gone through the engine replacing the rings and various other parts to make it fresh.

he also has a hard top for it. He thinks he wants $5000 for it but is unsure or what it is worth. Thoughts?

I don't even know enough to tell by the pic if it is a 68! It is nice but I'm not a Spitfire guy. Would love a early GT6 though

Your profile only says "south west" so I arbitrarily chose Salt Lake city for zip code purposes. According to the NADA Classic guide and residing in Utah, they report an average retail value of $5600 for the car +$1000 for the hard top. You can get a more accurate idea based on your actual zip code using the link below.

With new paint and a refreshed engine, the asking price seems very reasonable to me. Of course, it all comes down to how it drives and what you think it is worth to you.

If it's a '68, I think someone has put an earlier front end/bumper on it. (But kept the later turn signals?)

It looks like a lot of sports car for 5 grand. I wouldn't add for the hardtop. Unless you have somewhere to store it safely, too much of a hassle.

I was pretty sure he said that was the year, I may have screwed that part up. South western...... Next line is Pennsylvania.

I called the owner, it's a 1965. Trying to get him to regristar with the BCF. Without this place I'd never been able to keep my 8 running. Thanks guys

DOH !!! Sorry... my eyes didn't make a carriage return.
PA is a lot closer than Salt Lake. What makes me feel even dumber is that the zip code request at NADA is for their optional car locater feature, not the value guide.

For a '68 the average retail is still listed as $5.6k (regardless of zip code). If it's a '65, NADA says average retail is over $7k. There was no mention of a hardtop for a '65.

A hardtop is a pain to store in the summer. However, my son loves the one for our '72 as it makes the car much more pleasant in winter. That said, if the hardtop the seller has isn't in good condition and complete, rebuilding them takes a lot of money. An incomplete hardtop or one needing restoration adds nothing to the value of the car.

The hard top looked in great shape. The owner has kept it this long because of being sentimentally attached to his dad's car. Would like to see some buy It to drive to.... Not far from the summer party at the roadster factory

The front clip has been replaced with a later front end. This can be changed to MK 1 specs, so no issue. If the rest of the car is correct for a MK1, is in good condition, and drives ok, then $5K isn't too bad. If it's a mix of various Spitfire models I'd be very careful, and offer about half what he's asking. Good luck.

Interesting that the early car is listed as worth more, I suppose the farther you go back the rarer they get, I would think '67-68 would be best with the 1296cc motor and little or no emissions stuff on the cars. But getting back to the original question, if the car is rust free, new paint, runs good, interior decent, sounds like a good deal to me, not a steal, but a good deal.
