TR2/3/3A Water in Trunk

All:

I bought my TR3 about three years ago. I used it sporadically, but have had more time with it recently. I have always been surprised at the amount of water that leaked into my car (I can't speak for other cars). This weekend I noticed something in the trunk for which I need advice:

Rainwater runs into the channels along the edge of the trunk. It runs down these channels into two holes, one on each side of the trunk. From there it just runs into the trunk and puddles up. Now, I know there should be hoses attached to these holes to carry the water way, but when I lift up the mat on the trunk floor directly below where the water runs into the trunk there are no holes to which you could attach a hose to carry the water away from the car. However, there are holes in the trunk floor a bit more forward (near the back of the rear seat), but these seem at bit oddly located to be help divert water out of the car.

The car was restored some 10 years ago. Perhaps the restorer plugged the holes inadvertently?

Any help will be appreciated,

Mike

There should be holes through the side, just below the spigot for the drain hole. The entire tube is only 5" or so.

Not sure what the other holes are for. Are they behind the fuel tank? There are holes under the tank, but they can't be seen with the tank installed.

Not a very good photo, I'm afraid, but it's all I have handy. Maybe someone else has a better one. This is the drain tube where it comes out after going through the panel on the side, looking upwards inside the fender.

Here is a pic of where the tube runs from inside the boot corners to the outside through the tail light nacelles.

Hello Mike

To be clear the tube goes through the the hole in the rear light bump out.

Tush I notice that your photo looks like the repair part I got but did not match my car. On my car the cage nuts are on the rear apron and the apron and side panel join with a flange.

Hi David,

The photo I posted was not my car...it is one of the other guys resto photos (Keith maybe?). On my 1960, I bought that stiffener panel and it does come with the cage nuts on the back of the stiffener panel (same as the original panel I took off the car). I fitted my panel as per the photo I posted and it seemed to work well that way.

Hello Tush

Having revisited the passenger side rear quarter when I fitted the rear wing I started to think that I should have used the repair panel with the nuts attached. With my improved welding it would have been easier if I had done that but at the time I was not too keen to cut all that out. I will probable leave it as it is now.
That rear quarter had a bang at some time. I discovered just how bad it was when removed 2 1/2lb of bondo from the wing. I have got most of it beaten out and replaced the rear edge of the wing so I can get by with a skim of bondo.
It was almost 1/2" thick in one spot.

Thanks, guys. I spotted the outlet hole today.

Now here is the next question: Will and hose do or should I order a part from one of the suppliers?

Worth a try; but I didn't find any that would both fit over the spigot and snugly inside the hole, but not crimp going around the corner. Needs to be relatively thin wall, but also relatively hard rubber; the stuff I found was too soft. So I broke down and bought from TRF.

I found a clear urethane hose at the auto parts store (Advance) that was the proper I/S and O/S diameter to fit. Obviously clear urethane is not original, but for a driver, it's functional.
