Water in overdrive and transmission

Recently acquired a 56 BN2 that has not run for 20 years. I started changing fluids and the 4 speed transmission is full of oil and water. I mean a lot of water. I think someone intentionally or unintentionally filled the transmission with water. I have drained the gooey fluid and removed the side cover on the transmission and cleaned it. Everything inside looked in good condition once the water and oil was removed. No rust and gears look to be in excellent condition. I then removed the drain plug on the overdrive and the same gooey mixture was in the screen. My question is it possible to flush the overdrive? Or do I need to remove the overdrive and disassemble? Can the overdrive be removed without removing the transmission?

Removing the OD with the transmission in the car is doable but not recommended it is very tricky.

The OD "could" be removed without removing the transmission. Getting it back together is another matter.

Really, the water has probably not hurt anything. You could flush things out with solvent, clean the screen, refill with 30 wt oil & give it a try. If it works, drain the oil again & refill with the same or RL MT-90.

When you replace the side cover, make absolutely sure that the balls & springs are all back in & in the correct places.

Yes the engine is running. Currently the car is on blocks and I have tested the running gear. It will shift in all gears. I even got it to 20 MPH standing still.
Flushing with solvent----Do I have to flush the overdrive on the car or does it have to be removed?

Well since you have run the tranny and you are operating under no load. I might suggest filling the tranny which will address the OVD too with standard transmission fluid and circulating that through it for a bit. Then drain off and refill with a single viscosity motor oil. My Initial concern was how well the leather brake band in the OVD had survived the water. Perhaps it is OK ?---Fwiw--Keoke
