Most Spitfire, TR-4, TR-6 racks have small roll pin in the top that keeps the pinion in place. Clean up the shaft and the area around the snap ring and you should see the roll pin. I haven't reworked a rack in about a year so I am speaking from memory. When I dissasemble and rework a rack the only things that I usually find is the long bar (rack) with the slots cut into it, is sometimes bowed, which will cause the steering to be hard to turn. I have straighten the bars and they seem to work OK, but I don't know for how long. I have never found a bad bushing out on the ends, and I pack the racks with red grease and they seem to work OK. Best of Luck, Bill C. Mesa, Az.
