TR6 TR6 Steering Lock

Hey folks,
Does anyone, know how too/have any tips for, removing the steering lock on the TR6. I lost both sets of key's (don't ask, I know I know /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif) and need to replace the unit. so far I have tried cutting it apart with a blade and also drilling up through the sheerbolts, but its a very awkward place to work at. any help will be greatly appricated.

Remove the seat and runner so you can lay in the car upside down (this will save your back and it doesn't take long to pull the seat and runner either). Put on a full face mask or equivalent, crawl under the dash and get to work. Drilling the shear bolts could work. I used a cut off wheel on an air tool many many years ago.

Try using a smaill chisel and a hammer and try to loosen the bolt around by tapping the head around. Once loosened it will be removable by using your fingers. If you have cut into the bolt you may have to tap it until the head is above the recess and then get some grips on the head.

I got lucky with one of the shear bolts on mine. Tapping a small chisel in efforts to unscrew it worked. However, the other one became a little more of a challenge. In the end, I put a cut off wheel on my Dremel and wore the diameter down to a point that I was able to cut a small groove in it. Stuck a screwdriver in it and out it came.

[/ QUOTE ]Might be a bit of work, but what about removing the entire column and taking it to a locksmith?

Alternatively, you could always order a BMIHT build certificate and hope that a: it has the key numbers on it (they're not always recorded) and b: no one before you changed the lock.

Use a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel to make a small slit across where the original head was removed and use a flat head screwdriver.....worked for me!

Thanks a million for the tips, i had been trying some of them, i think its a matter of perseverance, it's just very awkward to get at. i'll give it ago at the weekend and report back. thanks
