TR6 TR6 engine start up

I'm about ready to fire up my TR6's engine (just rebuilt) and would like to know what oil should I use during that first start up. Also any recomenadations on rpms not to exceed during first few hours. By the way the engine is on the chassis (body off)....not like I'm gonna be driving around...just starting it up.

Is this engine freshly rebuilt? There may be a ton of debate on this one.

I'd use Castrol GTX 20-50W with a can of Marvel Mystery Oil Additive added, but that's just my preference.

In my opinion, the most important factor after a rebuild is just how long you keep the break in oil and filter on the engine.

There have been a number of threads discussing oil and which is the best. You can search for zinc or ZDDP to find some of these. In general, you don't want to use a synthetic for break-in oil. The common wisdom seems to be that you want an oil with ZDDP (which helps lube the tappet faces). If you can find some GM Engine Oil Supplement (EOS), add that to the oil (it contains ZDDP).

Start the engine and bring the rev's up to about 2000. This helps ensure adequate oil flow. Run the engine in the 1500 to 2500 rpm range for 20 minutes. After that you can drive it normally (once you get the car back together). Change the oil after the first 100 miles.

Just a question about the engine on "test run" when it was originally made. I've seen some educational movies of how the Americn V8's were tested (and dynoed) on initial start up for about 20 seconds. What was the OEM's procedure for the TR6?
