for a TR3A pre- TS 60000.

Lucas Windtone Horns - finish of screw attaching dome cover - painted or natural metal

Bonnet Latch Mechanism:

portion attached to bonnet: we suspect these were painted after attachment to the bonnet, so everything including fasteners should be painted. Is this correct.

portion connected to top-rear of apron - Piggott's book shows painted mechanism, but unpainted fasteners

Lucas DR-2 Wiper Motor - what color for the motor housing, hammered silver , gloss black, flat black or crackle finish black. I have seen all, which is correct?

Thanks

I believe the horn cover screw was "plain" (probably actually gray cadmium). Not sure about the bonnet latch; but I've never seen what appears to be original paint on the safety hook.

The wiper motor housings I believe varied, most of mine have been crackle black. The one with hammered silver appeared to be a later replacement.

Frank, per TRA Judging Standards & Quality Guidelines.

Horn: "horn body is painted gloss black" Horm dome screw is not mentioned.

A NOTE ON HARDWARE: "The manufacturers of the various nuts and bolts that were used on side crurtain TRs were many and some of the finishes no doubt varied. ..........Judges are not to make deductions for consistency, as consistency didn't always exist, Neatness and safety take precedence on this one,"

As far as I know the Bonnet latch mechsnism is painted body color, I'm with Randall on the sfety hook.

Couldn't find anything definitive on the wiper motor housing. Most of the ones I have seen were black wrinkel paint with an occasional gray hamertone finish.

Cheers, Tinkerman

The horn cover screws on my pre-60k car are brass. They didn't look like they were painted over originally, so I just wire wheeled them and let them stay natural.

I am pretty sure that "windtones" were dip painted by Lucas. I have a couple that have what is left of the original paint. The screws were likely painted at that time, but the first time it was taken off, the paint was toast. It seems that they put a plug in the bellmouth of the horn, and just dipped them in a vat of really so-so paint. I think they look better with a new bright screw, as it creates a little sparkle on the horn dome.

Then how did the inside of the cover get (partially) painted without coating the works with paint?

The wiper motor field winding housing was (or should be)a hammer tone grey.....never black or wrinkle. You can actually buy paint that will hammer tone as original as to the exact shade,GOK(and he aint tellen).

Rust-O-Leum makes a Hammered grey paint. I've seen it in Home Depot.

Frank, I just dug out my horns(have 4, not sure why)and all the screws have a whats left of black paint on them.

I was also looking at some older pictures of restored and original TR's and they all had the black crinkle paint on them.

I know, I know, more confusion, heh.

Good luck, Tinkerman

If you're refering to the wiper motor -- I too looked at pics, there are 3 of TR2/3/3A engine bays in the Piggott book I have handy: 2 are black and 1 is grey proving exactly nothing except maybe this is a grey area (or a black hole).

Randall, can't you see that's a very, very dark grey!

BTW, mine was black wrinkle when I took the car apart and I have no reason to believe it didn't come that way.
