THE 7 STEP TOTAL PAINT PLAN

after talking to a few professional painters and alot of guys that drive MG midgets, ive come up with the failsafe total paint plan! here it is:

1.remove most everything removable in the painting area
2.sand entire car with 200 grit wet/dry
while also removing nicks, lumps, rust, etc
3.fill holes, dents etc with bondo, sand and repeat
4.paint repaired areas with primer, and fix all imperfections
with more bondo and sanding, prime as necessary to see imperfections....
5.sand entire car with 400 grit sandpaper
6.paint entire car with primer sealer
7.finally, ...paint the car, dry, repeat till desired finish
is achieved..

Sounds like a reasonable budget paint job, but do NOT fill rust holes with bondo. Cut back into good metal and weld in a patch panel.

After replacing any rust which would not grind out with new metal I then acid etched all bare metal, dried, applied neutralizer then primed. Then started the light weight plastic filler process to fill out any dimples etc; Repeated prime and filler process until I got the desired smooth finish.

1.1 : wash car completely down with powdered cleanser,
to get the oil , grease and polish off the surface

thats what I do since you do not know what was put on the surface before,,,,

Make that the EIGHT step paint plan: One more thing:

Wear all required protective equipment while sanding and painting. If you don't paint often, you'll have to go out and purchase the correct gear.

Paint materials are toxic. Use caution and follow all directions on the paint cans. If you're unsure of the proper PPE (personal protective equipment) to wear, contact the manufacturer or visit their website. They're required by OSHA to provide this info.

Serious business, painting. Wear the correct safety gear, please!

we discussed the $50 rustoleum paint plan last year....
those pics look real good, but im gonna stick to my
original plan and go polyeurethane as its bound to
be better in the long run....
i WILL b using rustoleum spray cans on my smaller parts that im painting black though....zimmmmy

Nope, you want krylon rust tough semi-flat rattle cans. They spray in a fan pattern and have good coverage and is very durable.

ya, i have some of that paint,... it is good stuff...
i think mine is primer with zinc....z

It is one of the few off the shelf rattle cans that give a good spray pattern and decent enamel finish.

The castlewholesaler price is very good. If you buy it off the shelf it will cost $4.50 or more.

I use it on the mailbox, basketball goal post, light post, any and all sorts of brackets. So, I ordered 10 when I saw the price.
