The settlement has finally come in from getting rear ended almost two years ago. The TR3 was rebuilt pretty quick and now that I am getting some $$ for injuries I was thinking "Super charger" I already have the HVDA 5-speed and R&P steering.. If I get the S.C. what can happen to the rear end? I have not rebuilt it, just cleaned up and new oil. Any other negitives?

I'm thinking the rear end will have to go faster to keep up with the front end. Negative is the engine might develop that distinctive whine.

Dan, a Quaife differential would work. I don't know if the axles would be a problem. Two ways to go would be to drive it and keep an eye on the diff. Unless you really hammer your 3 you should be okay. The second way to go would be to research how guys who race TR3's prep their cars and follow their lead. Let me know when you start work on installing the SC so I can stop by to help and ooh and ahh. John

I recall the Judson units and they were real popular in the sixties. I lived close to Conshohocken at the time and we would hang out and watch supercharged VW's racing all the time. Occasionally we would see a TR or MG with a Judson. They went real fast, but only for a short time. :jester:

Yeah, but the Judson had it's own set of problems that any decent blower design should side-step.

Based on my limited experience, I'd say the ring gear is the weakest part of the TR diff, and that it will probably be OK if you avoid popping the clutch (or stick with skinny tires that will spin easily).

The racers tend to have problems with breaking the axle shafts just outside of the wheel bearing.

But I think that has more to do with the rigors of racing and sticky tires than how much power they make. If you are worried about it, though, there is a conversion available that I hear is very effective.

I don't think you'll find a Moss Eaton supercharger to neccesarly be rear end ripper. The Moss SCs are fairly low boost at 5 psi or so, it will give the car a nice HP boost and wider torque range. The only issue is you don't want alot of compresion ratio for a forced induction engine, anything under 9.0 to 1 with the Moss Supercharger and the normal SC pulley will be fine, if you looking to make more boost 8-10 psi, target 8.0 to 1 for you compression ratio.

Thanks for all the info.
I want the SC for the extra HP and torque. Not really to hammer the gas, but for the fun factor... and I really like the way it looks in the engine bay, Maybe I should leave the bonnet off?

Dan, if you're considering the new Moss supercharger kit, check if it fits into a TR3 engine bay - Photo's show the product development work was carried out on a wider TR4.

IMHO based on experience, a fresh,blue-printed diff can take a lot of power, perhaps as much as 180/200hp.At least for a while. If it is worn enough that the ring and pinion are not seating up properly, you have a grenade on your hands and it will be a matter of time/abuse before it goes bang!
I too want to have a blower on my tr3 project and fully expect it to make 200hp when finished .You can bet that I will be putting a toyota third member in it so as not to be abusing my towing coverage....

Just get a plexiglass shop to do a lay up on your stock bonnet and then finish the edges etc. so you have a complete see through bonnet over the blower.....

Well with my Awesome Wife's encouragement I just ordered the supercharger, big boost kit and new distributor. I have to switch to negitive ground, the cost difference for the petronix to a new dizzy is worth buying a new dizzy complete with petronix. Now the hard part WAITING FOR IT TO ARRIVE!

That's a drag! I wonder if they've sold a lot, or if there is just a supply problem.

The car I crew on has twisted the splines on the Southwick conversion once. Brand new track and some curb jumping was probably the cause. You make enough horsepower, you will break axles and transmissions.
