A couple of tricks I've used:
- for checking clearance for something hidden like the distance between the top of your engine and the bottom of your bonnet: mix up some biscuit dough (leave out the expensive sugar and stuff) and drop a ball of it on top of the valve cover and close the hood. Open the hood and slip a rod into the freshly shaped dough and you have your clearance.
- when I trial fit the transmission last night after all the measuring, I gobbed some typewriter whiteout over the end of the input shaft first. Snugged up the bolts, then removed the tranny and there was no whiteout inside on the end of the busted bolt, so no contact
- I've used your basic permanent felt marker to pick up clearance/lack of clearance areas when struggling around the house with door deadbolts etc.
