PROP ROD BONNET RATTLE easy solved

One of most noisy problem on my AH BN4 was the Prop Rod disengagements from the rubber support,
a very strange event, rubber support is so hard that push-in the prop rod is a difficult job, but a short ride, and the prop rod are free in the engine bay
one short piece of wire hanger, 2mm diameter, inserted on the rear of the rubber support, in the same hole of the cotter pin, can solve this problem

a plastic pipe or a shrink soak give a better handling

I now would fit the same MOD on the boot (trunk) were rubber support is very lose, and Prop rod tumble down when I open

You should not need that mod.

Has the rubber hardened to such a point with age that it no longer grips the rod. If so it should be replaced.

Try using the red rubber grease on the rubber units, you will find that the rod engages more readily.

Hi Bob
Thanks for reply -I have one very OLD(arrived with the car) rubber support - and one NEW (from AH Spares)
The OLD (trunk/boot) retain the Prop Rod very well during the ride -- but smashes it down when I open the trunk (this is very dangerous for body paint)
The NEW (hood/bonnet) never retain the prop rood of the Bonnet during the ride-- and is hard to fit the Prop Rod- in (I use Lithium grease on it for easy fit)
So this morning I have added the MOD also to the trunk -I have also considered the exchange rear to front, but this solution is very sure and cheap
Cheers

Strange, in my car (a 65 mk3) it is hard to get the rod out of the rubber support.
It is squeezed very tight.

The rubber support is not replaced in recent years.

There are two rubber prop rod supports available. Moss supplies on and British Car Specialist the other. Compared to an original , the one supplied by BCS is more correct but will not hold the prop rod for the bonnet ! So I used Moss' with the more pronounced squeeze in the end. It is harder to pull the rod out but it has never popped out while driving. The boot lid uses the BCS piece and it has worked fine.

Is a very strange - apparently my car is alone with this problem - engine was perfectly balanced, and haven't vibrations also at high rpm throttle
I will order one to MOSS to experiment what Brinkerhoff suggest (difference on rubber quality)
Cheers

No Andrea my bonnet prop rod used to fall out of the clip also , even with the new correct one from BCS. I have a few new ones from Moss that I didn't want to use because they weren't strickly "original". I think it is because we have our cars so finely "tuned" that ours fall out ! It must be a reminder to be humble...

Hi Andrea
I have just put new boot and bonnet prop rod rubbers in my car. They came from A H Spares and although the bonnet one is a little tight, they work perfectly.
