Would anyone share good or bad experience with the quality of Dayton spoke wheels? I'm planning to purchase a set an like to find out if they stay true for a while, if spine holds up...corrosion etc..

I bought a set of 72 spoke (stainless) for a BJ8 sometime in the mid 1980's and they have been driven for 50,000+ miles with no problems.

I am about to mount a set of five sealed (tubeless) 72 spokers to new Vredestein tyres sometime in the next 15 minutes. I've installed at least ten sets in the last five years with no complaints. The only complaint I have is it took three weeks to get he correct wheels after they sent the wrong ones. They just refused to believe that they had made a mistake. (And this car is leaving for Vermont tomorrow)

...I have them, no problems at all, chrome is holding up just fine, splines just great and have a V8 in mine.

LuckyLuke,

I have no experience with Dayton... However,

I purchased a set of chrome wire wheels (72 spoke) and tires (or tyres as the case may be) from Hendrix Wire Wheel for my 58 100-6 (BN4). The customer service is unbelievably good ....and the quality of the wheels is truely outstanding...They go beyond the extra mile... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

I will buy my chrome wires for both my '57 A and '66 B from Hendrix...and any other car I may purchase in the future. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/winner1.gif

I will suggest that you contact them before you lay out the money for the wheels elsewhere... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Their website is: Hendrix Wire Wheel

Hello Lucky,

Just be sure they are stainless and not just chrome. I purchased a new set of chrome steel (Daytons) from a major West coast British parts supplier... I could not keep them trued, as the spokes would break ever so easily just driving normal. I eventually bought a set of knock off mags and have loved them ever since, it's like driving a newer car!

Cheers,

barneye, sorry to hear of your bad experience,i bought mine just over two years ago and theve been a blessing, you sure they be "daytons" ive never ever heard of this happening, i know theres at least a couple of foreign made look-a-likes that are being pawned off there so bad you can actually stand in front of them and watch them rust but you said the place you got yours from was reputable, broken spokes? hum somthin not right here. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

From what I understand, stainless only applies to the spokes. The rim and hub are still chromed. You can also order heavy duty spokes (I went that route).

Lucky -

I've bought a set of 48 spoke painted Daytons from Hendrix for my BN1 and a set of 72 spoke chrome Dunlops from MWS in the UK.

All I can say is the difference in quality was night and day - the Daytons arrived perfectly true and were made of the best quality, very very impressive.

The Dunlops arrived and within 10K miles I probably had 10 broken spokes and within 30K miles I had about 70 broken spokes - it was so bad i sent the wheels to BWW to be rebuilt with stainless spokes. To be fair BWW did a very nice job and the Dunlops haven't given me a lick of trouble since for over 50K+ miles.

The key here is to make sure the wheels are professionally trued whichever you buy. That being said I'd still go for Daytons given the choice.

I have had Dayton 60 spoke painted WW for about three years, mounted with Vredestein Tubeless tires (no tubes) and have not had any problems. Purchased them from British Wire Wheel.

Thanks for sharing the experience. Does Hendrix sell Dayton wheels?

How can you tell by looking at them which are Dunlap and which are Daytons? Which ones are made in India? Moss sold Daytons (I think)up until a couple of years ago. Now they sell something I have never heard of.

HI TH, Rumor has it that Moss is the US distributor for MWS wheels in the UK. They are as far as I know one of the top wheel manufactures in the world to day. They build an all stainless steel wheel but I am not sure that is the version Moss is stocking. However, any of their in house manufactured products are top drawer.--Fwiw--Keoke

Yes, Alan Hendrix prefers the Daytons.

FYI you should always buy wire wheels from a specialist rather than someone like Moss, as the wire wheel specialists will typically true/check them first - this is all Hendrix does.

In fact I would buy them with new tires mounted on the rim - Hendrix will do the full balance/true method and shave the tire round to boot. This means the tire and wheel combo will be the smoothest you can get from Hendrix. I can vouch for his method, my BN1 drives like a champ.

Daytons from Hendrix, you can't go wrong. Plus, they are very responsive to your questions, and go out of their way to make you happy with the process!

Gentlemen,

When I bought my wheels with tires mounted from Hendrix they had put little tags on each wheel to let me know where each belongs... RR, LF, etc. They had hand selected the truest wheel for the front left, next truest for the right front, etc.

I had heard that the 60 spoke had a problem with the front hubs on the 57 BN4. Allan, of Hendrix, sent me a 60 spoke wheel with tire monuted so that I could check. The 60 spoke, in fact, does not fit on the BN4...The inboard spokes rest against the hub. This is true for any of the 60 spoke wheels on the market.

I purchased the 72s and shipped the one 60 spoke back to Hendrix.

Outstanding service. This is a quality supplier. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

By the way. 'Tis true, any of the quality wheels on the market appear to have stainless spokes and chromed wheel/hub.

It looks like that Hendrix provide some good service. The selection of what wheel goes where is that the truest wheel/tire goes closest to the driver and the worst furthest away. Standard practice even Wal-Mart does that.
