Magnetic ring in the Gearbox and Overdrive

Page 37 of the 3000 MKIII drivers handbook says:

Gearbox and Overdrive (A)
Remove the magnetic ring, filter gauze and clean it.

Where is the magnetic ring?

I removed the large brass oil drain plug to find a red fiber washer around the treads. Resting in the center of that plug was the oil pump strainer.

It seems whom ever rebuilt the overdrive installed 3 black fiber washers under the strainer. The size was just about same as the outside diameter of the strainer. I didn't see those in the break down diagrams. So I took the setup to my Mechanic. He didn't know why they were there and recommended I leave them out.

Thinking out loud. Maybe it was an after market strainer and needed the washers to keep it pressed up to make a seal against the bottom of the oil pump body? Are there any after market screens that are not the right size?

However with the 3 stacked washers under the screen, the center ring of the screen did seem touch the raised center of the brass plug. It seems the 3 black washers covered a lot of the bottom of the screen. That's a lot of screen area that's not doing its job. Anyone run across this?

Anyway, back to the where is the magnetic ring. It is listed in the Moss catalog #866-220. However Moss does not show it in the break down diagram.

Yepp, the magnetic ring goes between the screen and the brass plug. BCS carries them and I just recently bought one from them. Someone may have put the washers under the screen to make it seat better if the screen had been flattened out. But then again, the screen may be flattened out a bit because of the washers they put under it!

Anyways, the magnetic ring sits in the plug cavity without touching the filter screen. It just lays down in there.

What I find interesting is that the more I work on my car, the more I find the PO did not always do what was required.
We'll see what I find next on my maintenance items. The good news, every time I take a small project on, my car seems to benefit as a safer and better driver. Plus I learn along the way. Which in turn I can share here on the form when the same question comes up again. Been there, done that.

Check to see if any thing in there is magnetic. You may just have them in there. I not they are available or you could get a better one with a stronger magnet from many sources (other than the usual folks) by googling for magnets. A strong one will help ancher those flakes in the brass basket form miss shifts.

Hi Roger, origially there was a single ring that was some where between 1/16" - To - 3/32".--Fwiw--Keoke

When I drained my overdrive, and removed the washer from the brass screw on cap/ plug I did not realize what I had in my hand, it appeared to be one washer with lots of paste clinging to it, turned out to be three flexible magnetic washers and they will only go together when each is placed a certain way around - like poles repel - opposites attract
