Last Big Healey?

When talking British classics, it’s impossible to ignore the likes of the Jaguar E-Type and Aston Martin DB5. But while those are pop icons in their own right, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III is a bit of a specialty.

the-last-austin-healey-3000-mk-iii-ever-produced-heads-to-auction-116318-7.jpg

As compared to Jaguar and Aston Martin, which are still with us, the venture created by Austin and Donald Healey Motor in 1952 came to a conclusion in 1972. The cutesy Sprite is a quintessential product of this legendary link-up, albeit the 3000 Mk III is the car Austin-Healey enthusiasts consider to be the British outfit’s crowning achievement.

17,712 examples of the Mark III were produced from ’64 to ’67, and this here is the last one ever made. Chassis HBJ843025 was manufactured on the 21st of December, 1967, and the current owner bought it 45 years ago. Yup, this is one cherished example of the 3000 Mk III, a back-to-basics sports car to die for. Better still, it has covered only 57,389 miles (92,358 kilometers) over the course of half a century.

“This is the first time the car has been offered for sale in over 40 years and as such an important and iconic British sports car we expect a significant amount of interest,” said Richard Greenhalgh, specialist at Classic Car Auctions. So what’s the estimate on this example of the Big Healey? £75,000 and £90,000 is CCA’s pre-auction estimate, but only time will tell if bidding will get rowdy.

Benefitting from a fresh restoration that finished just a year ago, Healey’s last-ever Mk III is joined by a large history file, lots of documents, and a heritage certificate. Of course, the inline-six powerplant benefits from a high-lift camshaft and SU HS6 carbs, additions that saw power go up from 136 to 150 bhp. And compared to the previous iteration, the Mk III boasts power-assisted brakes as standard.

Last, but not least, it’s noteworthy to point out that this is no garage queen. And even restored, the final Big Healey doesn’t fail to show its patina.

The pictures on the auction site show them to be HD8s, so just a typo: https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/austin-healey-3000-mk-3 That head unit would look better replaced with something more in period. Nice looking car, though, with what looks like original interior and hood. Wonder what having the last one and in BGM will do for the price?

Nice-looking car, but obviously just a cosmetic 'restoration' (Reid, can we get a parked thread on what constitutes a 'restoration,' to go with 'what is and isn't a 100M?' Maybe 5 levels of 'restoration,' from #1: Earl Scheib paint job and tire gloss to #5: full-on, nuts-and-bolts, frame-off resto?). This looks like a quick makeover with several missing or incorrect details (boot lid seal, missing vinyl bead on door shut aluminum, ...).

I can't escape the feeling the claimed mileage on the car is understated; my BJ8 has almost 200K hard miles on it, and in some ways looks 'fresher.' Whoever did the 'restoration' wasn't a Healey specialist; and weren't a couple parts bin BJ8s built in 1968? Why did they need an auxiliary, pusher fan in England? Why no photos of the undercarriage?

Why is it never easy? We need Steve Byers in here to officiate. From Graham Robson's "The Big Healeys", 43025 was the last production car coming off the production line on 12/21/67. Two more cars, 43000 and 43007 were finished in January 1968. The last car, 43026 was built from scratch and finished March 14, 1968. 43026 is detailed here and is white: https://www.ahexp.com/registry/HBJ843026 Robson's book also contains a picture of a BJ8 going down the line with a sign saying "The End" on it, which I'm guessing is 43025. It appears to be a rather dark color (maybe BRG) so perhaps the GBM is a repaint (and why would you change the color of the last production car?)

43025 was NOT the last production car. The description is wrong on a number of points.
I had wondered where they got the build date of 43025 as 21 Dec 67, since the BMIHT certificate says build dates were 1 - 16 Nov 67 and dispatched on 22 Nov 67 to Donald Healey Motor Company in Warwick. The last car completed on the production line was 43000, built 23 Nov 67 - 11 Jan 68 and dispatched 6 Feb 68 to Philadelphia. That is probably the car in Robson's book with the bows on the back since 43000 was BRG (now Red).
43025 was the last car painted Metallic Golden Beige.

Sure. Go ahead and compose something to kick it off and I'll make it sticky ("sticky" being forum-speak for making threads stay at the top of the page).

The VIN plate looks like a modern repop/re-stamp. Why was it changed, and is the original still extant?

The firewall grommet immediately under the body number plate looks to have been replaced as the wear pattern on the body number plate suggests a larger grommet originally occupied that position.

In other news, I had an opportunity to buy 43000 in 1985, I believe, in California. I thought it was cool that it had the late, very round chassis number, but the condition wasn't quite what I hoped for, so I passed. Now that I learn that it was indeed the last-finished regular production big Healey, it smarts even a bit more. (Thanks a lot Steve!)

The VIN plate is a reproduction (should be the "oval" type and the VIN isn't in the correct format, either). The body plate is original and has the correct body number for chassis 43025.

Reid, are you sure it was 43000 you had a chance to buy? The last owner of record (Rye, NY) told me in 2000 he bought the car in 1968 in New York from an Englishman who bought it new and sold it to him when he was transferred back to England.

Maybe it was 40000. I was a REALLY round number starting with 4. It was BRG.

UPDATE: This has been added to the story:

"
 • We don't want to 'labour the point' but this is the LAST big Healey off the line - ever!!!
NB: We are aware of the three cars assembled after Chassis 43025. When the production line was stopped, a further two cars were assembled late in 1967 and another car was built from parts by apprentices in March 1968. This car (43025) was registered to the Donald Healey Motor Company and was, non-negotiably, the last Healey 3000 off the production line."

The text of a post is limited to 10000 characters, which my original attempt exceeded, so I will post the following in successive chunks and see if that works.

Some correspondence between me and the auction house;

There are several incorrect statements in your description of the subject car. It is NOT the last Healey 3000 to leave the production line. HBJ8/43025 was built 1 - 16 November 1967 (copy of BMIHT certificate attached), despatched on 22 November 1967 to the Donald Healey Motor Co. in Warwick. The last car to complete the build process on the regular production line was HBJ8L/43000, built 23 November 1967 - 11 January 1968 and despatched on 6 February 1968 to Philadelphia, PA USA (copy of BMIHT certificate attached).

The very last Healey 3000 (by both chassis number and build date) was HBJ8/43026, not built on the production line (which shut down at the end of December 1967) but in the "Show Shop" in March 1968.

HBJ8/43025 was the next-to-last car by chassis number, and was the last car painted Metallic Golden Beige. Although it may have HS6 carburetors now, the original carbs were HD8. I suspect the statement about HS6 is also in error.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your email, we are aware of the 3 cars that were built after chassis #43025. Austin Healey was sold and incorporated on 21st of December 1967, chassis number #43025 was the last car off the production line prior to sale/ incorporation of Austin Healey. The car was registered to Donald Healey Motor Company as the last production car. The following three cars were started before the demise of Austin Healey however finished at a later stage as is clearly evidenced by the much longer build time shown on the factory records. Chassis number #43025 is the last official car off the production line before closure of Austin Healey, we are not stating it was the last car built.

Thank you for your prompt response, Mr. _______.

I'm afraid I do not understand some of your statements. I have been the keeper of the worldwide BJ8 Registry since 1998, and as of today the registry has data, records, and ownership history for exactly one-half of the total BJ8s built (8,856 of 17,712). I have been immersed in BJ8s for almost 20 years now and have been able to build a database of actual data that is frequently useful to the BJ8 community to help us learn more about how the cars were originally built, how they are configured and distributed around the world today, and to refute statements that are incorrect.

"Austin-Healey" automobiles were a product of and manufactured by the British Motor Corporation in the MG factory at Abingdon. There was no company known as "Austin-Healey". Even if "Austin-Healey" was incorporated on 21 December 1967, the details of the build of 43025 that are preserved in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust archives at Gaydon clearly state that the build dates of 43025 were 1 - 16 November 1967 (a copy of the BMIHT certificate stating so is attached) and that the car was dispatched to the Donald Healey Motor Company on 22 November 1967, so it was a month off of the production line and gone by 21 December. The following cars (per BMIHT data) were completed and dispatched after 43025. Dates in red are LATER than 22 Nov 67 when 43025 left the factory:

43000 (built 23 Nov 67 - 11 Jan 68, dispatched 6 Feb 68 to Philadelphia, PA, USA)

43008 (built 10 Nov - 29 Nov 67, dispatched 20 Dec 67 to Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA)
43009 (built 8 Nov - 23 Nov 67, dispatched 11 Dec 67 to Mobile, Alabama, USA)
43014 (built 14 Nov - 29 Nov 67, dispatched 15 Dec 67 to San Francisco, California, USA)
43015 (built 10 Nov - 17 Nov 67, dispatched 15 Dec 67 to Compton, California, USA)
43016 (built 10 Nov - 7 Dec 67, dispatched 22 Dec 67 to Compton, California, USA)
43018 (built 31 Oct - 11 Dec 67, dispatched 22 Dec 67 to Compton, California, USA)
43019 (built 31 Oct - 28 Nov 67, dispatched 15 Dec 67 to Compton, California, USA)
43024 (built 27 Oct - 22 Nov 67, dispatched 1 Dec 67 to Lamb's Garage, Dundee, Scotland)
43025 (built 1 - 16 Nov 67, dispatched 22 Nov 67 to Donald Healey Motor Company, Warwick)

I could go on. Actually all cars prior to 43000 back to 42991 had later build and dispatch dates than 43025. I have all of the BMIHT certificates to prove it and can provide them if you wish. If you have documentation that proves 43025 was the last one to leave the production line before 21 Dec 67, I would very much like to see it so that I can correct the registry records, but look again especially at the "end of build" dates in red above that are all AFTER 43025 left the factory .

The build dates on the BMIHT/certificates document the steps in production from "Off Trim Line" to "Off Finishing". There are no other dates defined in the build process later than Off Finishing. The next date is "Date Advised", which would be the date that production announced to shipping that the car was complete and ready to go. If "Off Finishing" is not "off the production line", then what is?

How do you define the "three cars that were built after 43025"?

Steve , Good Afternoon.

My name is ******---------- and I do quite a lot of work for Silverstone Auctions preparing catalogue entries and helping to sort out the inevitable mistakes that occur when a dozen or so people are under pressure to close a catalogue with 200 cars.
I am 67 and have owned a number of big Healeys including an early 100/4 with a competition history,(which I bought in 1966), so as a 'Marque' enthusiast, I am as keen as you to ensure that what we commit to paper is accurate. I have read ------------ response to you and it's patently completely inaccurate, however, he does not claim to know what he is talking about, and is too young to remember the ins and outs of the Donald Healey Motor Company. In fairness, having had a quick look at our vendor's 'Entry Form' there are a number of claims on there which _______took at face value but which now may be incorrect.

The CCA catalogue has now been printed so it's too late to change that, but we can change the Website and issue a 'Saleroom Notice' prior to the auction.

I propose that I have a good look at the information provided to us by the vendor and form some opinions. I will share these with you and see what you think. It's patently obvious that you have considerable knowledge of the subject and, I guess, we will be guided by you, but as I said, it appears the vendor is under the impression that what he has told us is correct and the team were excited to be handling a car with such provenance.
If it appears that the car, although a stunning example, is not what he claimed, then we may have to revise the 'monetary value', which may not go down too well, but, given your information, we are obliged to correct any statements we have made and we are keen to ensure a happy purchaser on the day.
I will deal with this from now on and if you can give me 24 hours, I will get back to you with as much information as I can find at this end.
