TR2/3/3A Kastner "F" race cam again....

Just curious about the driveability of a TR3 if a full race cam was installed in a basically stock motor with a header? I realize that these cams were built for racing and a lot of other upgrades and head work would be done to compliment the cam. Besides a lumpy idle how would it run???

I drove a "3/4 race" cam for several years as a 20-something. Not too bad, but I wouldn't want to go any more radical than that. "Idle" even at 1500 rpm was lumpy (sounded like it needed a tune-up) and it took at least 2200 rpm just for a normal launch. Kind of tiring to go through at every stop sign or light. If you don't bump the compression ratio up (I was running somewhere around 10:1), low rpm will be even worse.

But it sure was a blast when the cam kicked in around 3500 rpm!

The extra power (combined with my driving style) probably also had something to do with all the drive line components that broke. Limping home with a broken tooth in the differential ring gear was the worst : ka-thunk ka-thunk ka-thunk.

I run a Kastner "D" Cam with 90+ off the head, 87mm and a lightened flywheel. It will idle at 1000rpm but needs a jab on occasion to avoid a stall. I have experience with an "F" Cam as well and don't think that's a good idea for the street especially if you are not going to increase the compression above 10.5 to 1, we ran closer to 11 to 1 on the race car. As Randall said initial launch will be difficult without increasing rpm to 2000 or above. Once moving at above 3000 it will be a kick to drive (again with the other mods suggested). I'd stick to something less radical and less duration.
